Yes it does. And the bloody thing is neck-heavy as all get-out. That's why I made that extension you can see on the upper horn. Now it balances on the strap. It originally looked very much like this:
![]() I got it used for cheap back in about 1980, so I had no qualms about letting out my inner Dr. Frankenstein. I carved a cavity for a second pickup, wired in a phase switch, wired it for stereo (note the 2 output jacks), swapped out the stock pickup for those EMGs when I went to 2 pups. Plus, it's been 4 different colors over the years, including a very striking Jackson Pollock-style drip job. I finally settled on the natural as the all-around best looking finish of the bunch. Or maybe I just got older and gave up trying - whatever. For all its shortcomings, it's probably the sweetest-sounding and most versatile bass I've ever owned (yes, including my '71 Jazz Bass). Then in a fit of Jaco-worship I decided that I just HAD to have a fretless, so I pulled the frets out. It still sounds good, but it's not magical like it used to be. My summer project this year is to re-fret the neck.

Here's my fretless which has been a work in progress for about a year now:
It's a Douglas WEB 825 NA which I originally purchased as a fretted, active bass. I've converted into a lined fretless, passive bass. It sports the stock bridge humbucker and a Seymour Duncan Basslines SJB-5n stacked neck pickup. It's strung with GHS tape wounds. |
