CIJ P-Bass!!!

Hi All -

Anyone heard any scuttlebutt about mid '80's P-Basses from Fender Japan?

The good? The bad? The ugly?

I had a mid-80s MIJ Jazz Bass that I bought new in 1988 or so, it was a really fine instrument.

Wish I hadn't been an idiot and sold it!

Cheers, Tim

Mine is an 87. (62 RI) It's a killer P bass. I did do a pickup replacement but then I can't ever leave well enough alone ;~)

I once owned a 1987 CIJ P bass. It was OK.

I say jump on it.
I bought a used a Pre back in 84 or 85.
62 RI Sunburst. Was very nice. Can't remember anything bad
about it. It had Fender Precision on the head stock and I think it
also had a tiny Squier logo at the end.
Nice finish and big wide neck. A very faithful reproduction.
Worst yet I can't remember why I sold it.
Curse you aluminum pans........

Oh, My Far-eakin Gawd!!!

I Got It! I Got It! I Got It! I Got It! I Got It! I Got It! I Got It!
I Got It! I Got It! I Got It! I Got It! I Got It! I Got It! I Got It!

Please excuse my hysterical elation ... I GOTS MY P!!!

I scored this baby last night from the CL, met the guy at an exit along the 91 Freeway as I was on my way to my restaurant gig ...

Japanese Fender P-Bass, F013xxx serial number puts it at '86-'87.

The neck is AWESOME (ROSEWOOD board!!!) - smooth as silk, and jazzy, like my G&L - no clunky baseball bat here. Body is black (pics shortly), a ding here & there, but overall very nice. Plugged 'er in to my Ampeg BA112 this afternoon and BLAM!!... FENDER PRECISION BASS. Man, NOTHING sounds like a P ... I love my G&L an' all, but it don't sound like a P.

That GROWL on the low E string, UHHH, it's a visceral thing, just grabs me by the - oh, sorry. got carried away a bit there.

This dang bass geetar is gonna become my instant #1 (Sorry, G&L).

YAY! WHEE! WHOOHOO!!

HAPPY HAPPY
JOY JOY

I guess the camera is on the charger?

Just how much coin did you need?

Congrats!

Pics!!!

Okey dokey, here we go ... '86-'87 MIJ P-Bass!!

Note stylish custom tuning key!

There's the trussrod ... man, that ROSEWOOD is beauty!

The works - gonna lose those hideous black plastic knobs IMMEDIATELY.

Well, there she be ... a little cleaning and TLC and she'll be fine!

Even came with a genuine Fender TWEED gigbag! I prefer hard cases for transport, but it was a great extra!

Paid $300, Dan.

Thanks! I was in a bit of a rush, as I had to get down to my gig, about 40 miles in Friday night traffic for a 7pm start, so I didn't get a chance to ask the guy for the story on the tuner key/washer thing (I'm planning on new ones anyway) ... maybe I'll email him. Frankly, as soon as I got my mitts on this baby, I wanted to throw the money at him and run like the devil before he changed his mind! He was very nice, said it hadn't been played in years - we agreed that it certainly should be. I'll try my bestest.

Here's the back of the headstock with that funky washer dealio - looks like it's just jammed into the slot in the post where the real key fell out. Anyone ever see that happen?

I've had the key part come loose, yep!

I like his substitution! I'd be tempted to leave it that way...

Cheers, Tim

It is tempting ... I'll live with it for a while, see how it goes.

Yikes! I suddenly have a (li'l) STABLE of basses!

Left to right, '86-7 MIJ P, '02 CIC Squire Affinity P (a very nice example), '91 G&L Legacy w/EMG's added.

I'm so happy ...

Hey, considering that I have the black already with the G&L, how hard would it be to peel the plastic finish off the MIJ? It has a few dings that go all the way through ... anyone know what kind of wood they used for the body at that time?
