I want one of these Squier's
Anybody played one? I have yet ot find one in the stores. Just curious what your experiences are. I haven't played bass in years, but these two basses have me considering it.

Sexy. I haven't tried out the Classic Vibe one yet but it does sorta ticks me off about the modern topload only bridge. Not to mention, LPB wasn't yet available as a finish when that style Precision was discontinued but that don't bother me quite as much as that totally inappropriate bridge.

The TB bass is stringthrough
The TB bass is stringthrough...the 50's isn't?
That might be the decision maker for me.

I just bought one of these for $279. Vintage modified fretless. I'm really impressed with the quality.
I do notice a definite difference in feel when I pick up my Geddy Lee Jazz, but, it's also 3 times the price.

That one is perdy too. Although I had a jazz bass for years (college), I am planning to go with a P this time.

The Vintage Modified P Bass looks just like a Tele Bass I had in the 70's. I loved that big old neck pickup, and with flatwounds that bass took me through hundreds of rock gigs. Loved it, and must have been VERY hungry when I sold it.

I played the TB unplugged and didn't like the feel or action. However, there are some cool demos of it on YouTube. IIRC - The Classic Vibe Precision Bass® ’50s is not in stores yet.

they do look very cool. the neck would have to be vintage spec for me to buy one though. i like 7.25 radius.
i tried a vintage looking squier strat at my local music shop a few weeks back. i was shocked at the quality. (VERY GOOD) my compliments to squier. maybe some day they'll be on par with the old MIJ's. |

Hello, All.
My first post here. No surprise my favorite electric guitar, hands down, has always been the Tele. I've owned many nice ones in my day BUT I am primarily a bass player, so I'll probably be doing most of my posting on this part of the forum. Wanted to say I have played the Squier VM Telebass that Jeru posted a pic of. In fact, I went to the shop specifically to buy one. But I ended up holding back. Now, I only played one example of this instrument, but essentially I found the pickup a little muddy for my tastes, even running it through several different amp rigs, EQ-ing, etc. It's most definitely full of bottom...very fat sounding and, well, bassy. But I just couldn't get much clarity from it. However, pickups can be changed. What really put me off was the neck. It just didn't have the right feel for me. Very unfinished feeling and, while looks aren't that important to me, I was not crazy about the stark white look of the neck. I know necks can be tinted and finished, but I didn't feel like messing with it. For awhile I considered getting one of these, replacing the neck with a neck from a Jay Turser JTB-401 I have (it's a copy of a 1954 P-bass with single coil and it's a great bass with a neck that feels like it was made for me) and further modifying it by routing for an original P-bass single coil pickup to go in the middle of the body, between the stock pickup and bridge. Then I saw the Squier Classic Vibe P-bass (the one in Lake Placid Blue, shown above.) I have to say, I love the looks of this and am eager to try it out and hear how it sounds, but I have a feeling it is going to have the exact same neck as the VM Telebass. The Squier VM basses I've played have felt solid and well built, and the VM Jazz bass sounded really incredible in fact. I just can't get along with the necks. They seem somehow mushy to me and one of the VM Jazzes at my local shop developed a neck twist/bow problem to boot. I think ultimately I'm going to just stick with my Turser '54 P-copy. Psychologically, it seems like I should buy something more expensive, but I really can't find anything to fault in my Turser except the pickguard is poorly cut and the nut and bridge seem a trifle chintzy (though perfectly functional for now.) As I say, I love the neck on it, the frets are flawless, and it sounds incredible. I'm coming to be more and more of the opinion that these days there are a lot of inexpensive instruments that really deliver the goods. Sorry for the long-winded post. I'm still anxious to hear if anyone tries out one of the Classic Vibe series. |

Welcome to TDPRI! You'll find lots of bass player/telecaster lovers here (I'm one). If your Jay Turser is ringing your bell, stick with it. I've given in to the need to have that name on my headstock. I did it once (OK, twice) and I don't really need to do it again. In fact, my "real" Fender neck got swapped for a Squier rosewood model with no complaints.

I've always wanted a '55, original or repro. Can't afford one. But THIS,..... has possibilities. The LPB would have to go for me though.

Do any of you Vintage modified Jazz or fretless Jazz know the neck pocket specs? I want to make an 8 string bass but the neck pocket has to be 2 1/2 inch standard Fender neck pocket. This is according to Warmoth ( I want to buy their 8 string neck).

My fretless VM jazz measures 2.435" at the 16th fret, and 2.535" at the 20th fret (the widest spot at the butt end of the neck). Hope this helps.
My Geddy Lee Jazz is 2.495 at the butt end.
