Tele Deluxe styled bass prototype!

I'm a member over at Harmony Central forums, and a guy from Fender CS stopped by today to show what he was working on and ask for feedback.

This is it....

Shape the pickguard to match the body, give it a maple neck, then ship it to my house for a trial run...... I'd like to hear those pickups.....

Link doesn't work for me and there's no way I would ever join Harmony Central, but this looks like a 72-79 era Tele Bass with a bridge pickup added, contour body and a worse pickguard shape. If their goal is another market failure, this ought to do the trick.

The whole pickguard affair makes it look like the Ovation basses from the 70's/80's. I'd like to see a pickguard that is more "Tele" derived or maybe along the lines of a "P" bass. Regards.

The forums just went down a moment ago, while I was sending a really long PM.

It's not supposed to be period correct, it's just in the style. A master builder at Fender is doing this. No decision on proper production yet.

Yeah I think so too. Still at the early stages though.

It is probably a great sounding/playing bass, but it has that 1960's Japanese "cheap bass" look.

Looks are subjective though...

The pickguard definitely needs to be reshaped, probably to the point where it no longer has anything to do with a Tele Deluxe.

My very first Telecaster was a mid-70s Tele Deluxe.

It was UGLY!

So is this!

Cheers, Tim

I like it a lot, but mainly because it reminds me strongly of my dad's old '70s Epiphone bass. Same color scheme, same basic pickup layout, etc. I'd hit it for the right price.

I realize that. But still, it's in the style of a failed model. Only uglier.

What's next...a Gibson Custom Shop Corvus?

Einstein supposedly said insanity is doing the same thing over and over again and expecting different results. Some guitar marketing people ought to pay attention to this.

At first glance I'd say it's the illegitimate love child of a GibsonThunderbird and 70's Telebass.
Gotta lose the pick-guard. Looks like it's melting and flowing in several different directions.
Sorry not for me.

Am I the only one who LOVES this idea? It looks like a tele bass, a hofner artist and a gibson ripper had a baby, and the baby's first word was THUMP.

I'm not opposed to the idea, that pickup arrangement might be extremely cool, but the pickguard (just like the one on my first Tele) is just plain profoundly wrong. In an ugly, blob-ish way. Just like on my old Tele Deluxe, they've taken a lovely piece of wood with nice grain showing through the excellent finish, and covered much of it with a big, unnecessary blob of black plastic.

I think the exact same bass, but with no pickguard, would be a thousand times more attractive...

Cheers, Tim

The last thing I think of when I look at that bass is a telecaster. With the pickgaurd it kinda reminds me of a 70's tele... Then again I dont really like those anyways.

To me this is just a standard bass with an ugly pickguard. Sorry, just being honest.

They should start by shaving off one of the cutaways, reducing the headstock size, fitting it with singlecoils and a traditional tele pick gaurd..

;)

Chris.

OOo okay... I see the resemblance now. That cream one is WAY nicer to the one pictured above. Pickguard design can literally make or break a guitar.

Personally I'm a minimalist when it comes to pick guards. I could really dig the Tele bass without it. That 70's thing up at the top is just horrific to look at ... gnarly ...

That's kinda what I like about it.

I'd play it that's for sure.

when i think tele bass.....
i think old.....

these new things look like crap.....

just like whats happening with cars now....
they are taking the old models we know and love and refurbishing them to look like "futuristic" crap :)

i liked the toyota hilux the way it was 10 years ago :)

same with the tele bass
