Favourite basslines

Lots to choose from, but I would have to say that Bootsy Collins' bass work on Parliament's The Motor Booty Affair, from the album with the same title, stands out currently as being a rather groovy bassline.

Any basslines you particularly like?

Chris Hillman on "So You Want To Be A Rock'n'Roll Star". I like his intro on "Eight Miles High" almost as much.

Paul McCartney on practically everything on Rubber Soul and Revolver.

Cheers, Tim

Oh, well if you're going to bring Jaco Pastorious into this, then I'll have to add the entire bass to Havona

Genius, and tasteful.

I actually did not want to name more from him, although his entire catalogue shoul be included here. Havona is an excellent choice.

specatular choice.

Guy's who just blow me away with their ability to just groove - not necessarily way out front, but just make the song smoke ...

Paul Jackson - the Herbie Hancock Headhunter's album, particularly Watermelon Man - If that ain't groovy with a capital G I don't know what is ...

Harvey Brook's - 'Free' from The Fabulous Rhinestones. an understudied master.

Rocco - well Jeeze! What is Hip for cryin' out loud. Prestia & Garibaldi just might have been the only funk bass 'n drum section that really knew where '1' was all the time... like a freakin' machine those guys were -

Rod Ellicot - When I'm Kissing My Love from Cold Blood. Yowza!

I have no idea who the guy was but ... the King Foyd version of 'Groove Me' ow! Good God a'mighty! dat's fun-kay!

Lopsey Lu - Hey that was like 74 ? 75 ? and Stanley could do that way back then ? OK - so he's a 'little out front' on that one ...

and speaking of Stanley - Light as a Feather - the whole thing. I mean I could pick the title track, but then there's Spain and the rest of it ... damn!

Jaco - my fav Jaco stuff isn't the over the top - out in front solo stuff. I really, really dug what he did with Joni Mitchell. Just smoking playing.

man - there are so many. The Jamerson/Babbitt stuff. What they did with Marvin Gaye, Early Stevie Wonder... so many of those are great. Where can ya stop ?

Conrad Lozano from Los Lobos kills me with his laid back groove. ALl the fat notes and none of the fluff!

There are a lot I like, but off the top of my head my favorites are:

Sir Duke - Stevie Wonder
La Femme D'argent - Air
I Want You Back - Jackson Five

I also love anything Paul McCartney ever did on bass.

YES!!! chris squire is amazing. I love the bass parts in Roundabout especially. I just love the independent feeling of it; while the bass supports the song it is wild and free.

Plus............well,almost everything else.
Sgt. Pepper was stupid good,as was Penny Lane.
As a matter of fact, the latter 2 songs have the best bass tone.

I Know a Little--Lynyrd Skynyrd, presumably Leon Wilkeson.

That's the bassline I run through whenever I pick up a bass and might consider purchasing it.
