Note - and 35 years later he showed me how to play it. (That's for another story.)
I was going to say the same thing! When I try to play it people think I'm trying to play Nirvana's "Come as You Are..."

I love almost every bassline I've heard from Bill Laswell... especially on the work he has done with Fred Frith. The song "Legs" is particularly awesome.

Ditto for Mick Karn.

Ahh so many. A few favs: John Deacon (Queen) Millionaire Waltz from Day at The Races. Haven't heard it? You should.
Colin Moulding (XTC) Mayor of Simpleton. Melodic, poppy, and fun.
Big fan of Martin Turner (Wishbone Ash) too. About anything from the New England lp.

Underrated? Jim Lea -Slade

Lots of Joe Osborn's stuff on the Bridge Over Troubled Water album, especially The Only Living Boy in New York.

"You can Call Me Al"-Paul Simon
All the little cues in "Seinfeld"-OK,they aren't fretless bass parts, but they should be!

A few I always seem to find myself playin' when I pick up my bass and start loosening up: For The Love Of Money-O'Jays, Green Eyed Lady-Sugarloaf, Basicality/NIB-Black Sabath, Standing On Shakey Ground-Delbert McClinton, Moby Dick-Zepplin, etc. So many are just ingrained in my consciousness they just bubble and flow out-Brian

Flashlight by Parliament. Even though the bass line was played on a keyboard it's still great.

I Want You Back by the Jackson 5 has the greatest bassline Jamerson never recorded.

There's enough groove there for 20 songs.

Desert island song...

"Now That We Found Love" - Third World

Sure would be nice to be playing this at the beach (as well as to be in a reggae band ) - instead of sitting here watching the glacier slowly melt.

I'll echo BottyGuy's choice of "I Want You Back" and also add "December, 1963" by Frankie Vallie and the Four Seasons (the bass makes up for horrible synth). I guess I'm in kind of cheesey Seventies mood today.

Chris Squire on "Long Distance Runaround" and "Roundabout" were the first time I ever paid any attention to the bass. If those two songs don't do it for you, you'll never get it.

Comus'es Andy Hellaby and the bassline from "Diana". So simple, yet so great.
The same applies to greatest Polish progressive rock song, "Krywaniu, Krywaniu" by Skaldowie (go ahead, seek it out in the web). Nice lines, plus the great, vintage sound with lots of low mids.

Amazing bass player.
"Highway Star" has a nice bass line. "LopsyLou" Stanley Clarke.
"Opportunity; 5 Gears in Reverse" and most any other Costello piece from the era. Can't recall his name now.

"If You Want Me To Stay" by Sly and the Family Stone. Larry Graham had left the group by this point, BTW.

I forgot about "Guns of Brixton"; there's certainly nothing tough about it as Paul Simonon wasn't exactly a master of his instrument but it's the best part of a great song.
