Jazz bass 1977/8
Hi everyone,
Can anyone help me on a valuation on a jazz bass my dad left me. it has an s8 serial number so I know it's from 77-78. it's in good condition with just a little buckle rash. it has original moulded case and all its parts i,e thumb rest, bridge cover and pickup cover. It also has it's original hang tags and warrenty card with matching serial no. It has never been modified or altered in any way. Please help Jon boy |

It could easily be worth $2000 if it's a 1978. But S8 serial numbers were used from 1978 until at least 1981, possibly later. If you want to try establish the date more closely, check the volume and tone pots for date codes (look for a 7-digit code, the 4th and 5th digits will be the year the pots were manufactured) and also check for dates on the pickups.

I can't link directly to the items because its a flash site, but take a look at Good Guys Guitars. They have a "1978-1981 Jazz Bass" (S8 serial number, 80/81 pickups, 81 pots), all original, for $2295. They also have a 78 (I'm assuming with 78 pot dates) but no thumb rest or covers and the case isn't original, they're asking $2395 for that one.
Their prices are usually realistic for a retail store, a private sale normally wouldn't bring as much. But this ought to give you a good guideline. |
