Dang, Bill Kirchen counts? I met Nick Lowe through Bill. I've also met:

John Lee Hooker
The Dead Kennedys
The Replacements (did gigs w/ them when they had Bob Stinson and later w/ Slim Dunlap)
Soul Asylum (did gigs with them too)
Mick Green
Pete Way
James Hunter
Alejandro Escovedo (bought me a drink)
David Sancious
Brian Setzer (an ass IMHO...)
Robyn Hitchcock
Alex Chilton
Billy Lee Riley
Billy Zoom
Dave Davies
Redd Volkaert

There are others, but I can't think of 'em at the moment.

  • Shook hands and exchanged a few words with Brent Mason just before he hit the stage at 3rd & Lindsley with The Players. One of the truly stellar, gifted players of our time who is as approachable and affable as they come. I've met far too many guitarists with barely a shard of Brent's talent who are insufferable divas.
  • Personally know George Jones, his wife, Nancy, and George's daughters; they're friends of the family. George is a laid-back, relatively quiet fellow who lets Nancy do all the talking.
  • Had a late-night breakfast several times with the late, great Porter Wagoner (a former neighbor) down at the neighborhood Waffle House. Super-nice fellow.
  • Used to wave and occasionally exchange a few words with Marty Stuart (also a former neighbor) most mornings when he went out to his driveway to pick up the morning paper (in his robe with his hair sans hairspray down over his eyes). Nice guy who always seems to be smiling.
  • Used to go down to Billy Cox's pawn and jewelry shop within walking distance of where I work and shoot the breeze with Billy. What a gentleman. Just a nice, humble, classy fellow.
  • Literally ran into Vince Gill at a Nashville Predators game. We spoke about Telecasters for a few minutes. (In fact, Vince Gill and Amy Grant are fairly ubiquitous around town; I've seen them several times.)
  • Was roundly cursed by Wynonna Judd at Club Mere Bulles for taking a chair from her (empty) table to my (full) table. She claimed she had a big entourage coming; however, the entourage never materialized. A foul mouth like a sailor.
  • Spoke with Naomi Judd about jazz while standing in the jazz album section of the now-defunct Tower Records. A classy lady, unlike her eldest daughter (SEE ABOVE).
  • Spoke with Chris Squire, Trevor Rabin, and Jon Anderson of Yes for a few minutes as they waited for their limos after their Big Generator Tour show here in 1988. Incredibly nice guys.
  • Said "Hi" to Geddy Lee at the backstage catering tent during Rush's Roll The Bones Tour in 1992.
  • Exchanged pleasantries with Stewart Copeland and Stanley Clarke at their show at The Cannery (a now-defunct Nashville club/venue) supporting the first Animal Logic album.
  • Visited with Steve Morse for about 45 minutes after a Dixie Dregs Bring 'Em Back Alive Tour show at 328 Performance Hall.
  • Like Brent Mason, Jimmy Wilsey, Vince Gill, and other notable guitarists with tremendous signature chops I've had the pleasure of meeting, Steve has every right to be a diva; however, he's anything but. He's one of the nicest, down-to-Earth, most humble people I've ever met.
  • Spoke with Adrian Belew several times down at the neighborhood Kroger supermarket. A quirky, yet very nice guy.
  • Spoke with Leeann Womack (another former neighbor) virtually every day for two years with absolutely no idea who she was. (I'm just not that attuned to modern country music, even though I am a native of the very city that manufactures it.)
  • Got Patti Page's autograph when I was about six years old; I had no clue who she was.
  • Met former Tennessee Representative and Senator Al Gore when he was U.S. Vice President, back in 1997, at Vanderbilt Hospital, where his father, former Tennessee Congressman Al Gore, Sr., had a room beside my mother-in-law.
  • The erstwhile VP walked up to me and my wife, stiffly stuck out his hand, and introduced himself to us. Completely unfazed, my lovely bride--who did not offer her hand--dryly replied in a most world-weary tone, "Yes, I know who you are." (You see, most Tennesseans simply don't like the man because: 1. He has a tendency toward pomposity; and 2. Unlike his claims, he's not a true Tennessean--he wasn't born here; he's a Beltway baby. In fact, he's never really spent a significant portion of his life here. Call us native Tennesseans provincial, if you must--I guess we're a lot like native Texans that way. )
  • Used to talk to Roy Acuff, Little Jimmy Dickens, Jack Greene, Bill Monroe, Kitty Wells, and many others at the Grand Ole Opry when my younger brother worked concessions there back in the mid-1980s. All of them perfect ladies and gentlemen.
  • Have seen Steve Cropper, Billy Gibbons, Eric Johnson, Garth Brooks, etc., etc., in various music stores in town (especially Gruhn Guitars). Just missed seeing Eric Clapton in Gruhn's once, or so I was told.
  • Spoke with Elvis Costello on 5th Avenue, just past the Ryman Auditorium, as he was taking a metallic blue Teisco Del Ray he'd just purchased at Gruhn's back to his hotel. A remarkably quiet, yet incredibly friendly fellow.
  • Saw Prince William (yes, THAT Prince William) and entourage at Sperry's Restaurant.
  • Not in Nashville: I jammed with actor Ryan Gosling at a cajun-style crayfish boil in a warehouse in downtown Los Angeles. (He's a friend of a friend of the formidable Mr. James Calvin Wilsey--SEE BELOW.)
  • We jammed Del Shannon's "Runaway" twice for about 15 or 20 minutes total--just the two of us on guitars with him singing lead and me singing harmony. Honestly, I didn't recognize him until after the tune when he shook my hand and said, "Man, that was great--I got to jam with a player from Nashville! I'm Ryan, by the way." A few minutes later, my wife happened to call to say 'hello,' so I handed the phone to Ryan; coincidentally, she had gone to the theater earlier that day to see Fracture. She nearly dropped the phone. The next morning, she thought she had dreamed it.

Mr. G told me that the next time he comes to Nashville, he's going to call me up for another jam. He has my name and number, but I certainly don't expect he'll ever call and hook up with me; nevertheless, my wife has told a lot of people, so I've got a bevy of females of all ages just waiting to tag along to meet and fawn over "Noah" from The Notebook if and when we do get together.
AND TWO VERY SPECIAL "BRUSHES WITH GREATNESS" WITH NO NASHVILLE CONNECTION:

1. In 1990, I was in my second year as a feckless junior at Tennessee Tech University. I skipped class so often that I once took what I thought was a biology final exam, but was, in fact, a geology exam. I hadn't shown up for class in so long, I had no idea the biology final was moved to a different classroom. What's more, I had no idea how far along the subject matter had progressed, so the geology exam—filled with lots of questions about fossils—seemed to me at the time to be a reasonable biology exam.

However, one of the few times I actually attended that particular biology class, I met Stephen Hawking. Yes, that Stephen Hawking. Professor Hawking was on a promotional tour for his then-new book,A Brief History Of Time. One of his tour stops was at Tennessee Tech, and for whatever reason, he stopped by our biology class. A few students—who, like me, didn't know who Professor Hawking was—were prompted by our professor to ask questions about the universe. Professor Hawking answered through an assistant, who could apparently understand his virtually imperceptible whispers—this was all prior to the text-to-voice synthesizer he came to famously use. As I previously said, I didn't know him from Adam; I thought he was just some sort of idiot savant in a wheelchair who seemed fixated on the Big Bang. I wish I knew then what I know now; I'd have bombarded him with all sorts of questions.)

2. Ever since his having joined the TDPRI several years ago, I've exchanged rather heated e-mails with the formidable James Calvin Wilsey (TDPRI's very own "WickedGTR," the original lead guitarist for Chris Isaak and Silvertone) regarding Blavastkian theosophy. His withering critiques are enough to make anyone plaintively intone, "This world is only gonna break your heart."

Seriously, one of the greatest pleasures of my life has been getting to know Jimmy (and his family and friends) these past few years. I've been a guest in his home several times, which is a heady thing because he's a hero to me, both as a musician and as a good friend/surrogate older brother. Jimmy is a sweet, quiet, laid-back guy whose sense of humor is about as off the wall as I've encountered in my 40 years. (I have two brothers, and I always refer to Jimmy as the long-lost fourth Terry brother because his insane sense of humor is virtually the same as mine and my brothers'. ) What's more, he's probably the most intelligent, well-read person I've ever known; he can speak at length and in depth on virtually any topic imaginable. Scary smart guy.

-------

I've had other "brushes with greatness," but they: 1. Were so pedestrian that I shan't bore you with details; 2. Were so forgettable that I--well, I simply don't remember too much about them at the moment; and/or 3. Were not known to be brushes with greatness until after the fact.

Final note: I had a great chance to meet and speak with Stevie Ray Vaughan for a while after his 1987 Valentine's Day concert at the University Of Tennessee Alumni Gym (opening act: George Thorogood and the Delaware Destroyers) during my freshman year at UT; however, my mind was elsewhere as I had rather ambitious hopes of scoring with a girl with whom I attended the show. (She was way out of my league; consequently, I didn't score point one. All apologies, Stevie--I should've known better.)

Though we have yet to meet in person, I've exchanged e-mails with the famous Joel Terry...

I've met a few over here from Adam Faith when he popped into the studio where we doing some stuff to see what was going on, with Chris Evert - the tennis player - in tow! (unlikely combo - but there you go). Nice guy, but we had an argument over him being rich and us being penniless. We were idiots then. Mike Peters of The Alarm - genuine nice guy. Elvis Costello in the Apple shop in Chicago where I was buying a new ipod & he was getting some speaker system for his. Nick Faldo, people like that, but by far, the most humble and genuine guy I have ever had the good fortune to meet is Willy Vlautin of Richmond Fontaine. It's easy to see where the humanity and empathy in his writing and songs come from when you meet him. Out of the relatively few that I have met, he may be the least famous, but he's the one that I am most proud to say that I've shook his hand. A lovely man.

Jonathan Richman, Nash Kato, Peter Buck, Robyn Hitchcock, Julianna Hatfield, Dave Alvin and D.J. Bonebrake were all very cool and down-to-earth when I met them after shows. I was in a wedding with Dave Pirner and he's a super nice guy, as well.

John C. Reilly was very stand-offish when I ran into him in a bar and told him I liked "Hard Eight." Michael Stipe made a face at me when I glanced in his direction at a bar in Athens once.

As many of you know, I have been involved in the music business as an agent and occasional concert promoter for many years. The list of "famous" people who I have met over the years is much too long to post here, but I'll mention a few encounters that were more interesting to me than others.

I've already told the story of promoting a Muddy Waters concert in college, and having to break into the Student Activities Director's office after the show to get Muddy's check to pay him. That was fun, and we sure had a laugh with Muddy and his band when we were doing it. I've also told the stories of dealing with the 3 biggest jerks I've ever encountered in the business: Jerry Lee Lewis, Chuck Berry and Michael Schenker. There have been so many pleasant encounters with entertainers over the years that I just can't count them.

There have been a couple of "close encounters", where I didn't actually meet the person, but I wish that I had. A couple of months ago, I was cruising along a curvy road near my house, secure in the idea that I wouldn't get a speeding ticket because I was tagging along behind a BMW convertible that was also well above the speed limit. When I pulled up next to the BMW at a traffic light, Martina Navratilova gave me a smile just before she made a left turn. She lives nearby, so maybe I'll meet her some day.

Another kind of close encounter involves someone that I didn't meet. My parents sold the house that I grew up in to the family of astronaut Laurel Clark, who died in the space shuttle Columbia. My younger sister had the experience of reading a quote from Laurel Clark somewhere, where she described growing up in our house and watching the lighthouse shine in her bedroom window. That had been my sister's bedroom.

Did stand up with Louie Anderson in Mpls for a couple of years before he got big, er I mean famous.

Did improv with folks that ended up writing for Murphy Brown (and a lot of other shows) Peter Tolan, and producing Dharma and Greg Sid Younger.

Tom Arnold worked at the comedy club across town so I would run into him every once in a while and Joel Hodgson (Mystery Science Theatre) worked at the same venue as Tom.

I met and got to talk to my idol Richard Pryor in Zimbabwe of all places walking along the path by Victoria Falls. I kept running into him and finally had the chance to talk with him. This was after the fire and you could really see the scars in person. He was really friendly and encouraging to a young guy who thought he might make it in show business.

I met Tony Hillerman at a writers conference the year before he died. Great man. I also met a bunch of other writes, J.J. Jance (loon), Michael McGarrity (I love his books but he really rubbed me the wrong way), and Craig Johnson (who I hung out with for a couple of day - great guy).

Lets see - no one here will probably know these guys but I have worked with two hall of fame cutting horse trainers - Leon Harrel and Tracy Barton, and I know Winston Hansma ( a past world champion) well.

Kim Lankford is a good friend of mine. She was on Knots Landing but would be more well known here for being Warron Zevon's long time girlfriend (she has some stories).

I've met, and done walking meditation with, Thich Nhat Hanh who was nominated for the nobel peace prize by Martin Luther King.

Used to live in Stamford so would occasionally see Gene Wilder and Cyndi Lauper around town.

That is probably enough for now.

Cool! I have a Pierre Moerlen's Gong album I think Hansford plays on - Time Is the Key. Going to see Gong later in the year too. I spoke to Daevid Allen at a Gong gig about 15 years ago, REALLY nice bloke. He had a genuine enthusiasm for life, music, everything. And he dedicated a song to me!

I met Kurt Cobain when Nirvana played in Edinburgh. I didn't have a ticket for the gig so I went down early to see if I could pick one up. Met a couple of guys outside the venue who were hoping to get an interview for their student newspaper and chatted with them for a while. Just then, Kurt walks past!

Students: "Any chance of an interview?"

Kurt: (Mumbled) "Yeah..."

Me: "OK if I come too?"

Kurt: (Mumbled) "OK..."

We followed Kurt into the venue and sat in the dressing room until the doctor arrived and we were asked to leave. Tried to look as inconspicuous as possible until the doors opened and we could disappear into the crowd. It was a great gig!

Hmm, I posted this in the brushes with fame thread, didn't know this thread was around - since it belongs here too, here it goes..

Robert Taylor (Dragon): Taught guitar at the store where I worked, gave me guitar lessons for a couple of years.

Michael Hutchence (INXS): Family friend, saw a lot of him growing up. Saw him a couple of days before he died, very sad..

Phil Jamieson (Grinspoon): A friend dated him, hung out a fair bit while they were together, jammed once or twice. Bump into him every now & then around town. He & the band signed a CD as a birthday card for my 18th.

Paul Kelly: When I was 13 or so we went on a family holiday to Queenstown, NZ to go skiing, one evening we wondered into a pub in town to get out of the cold.. one of the locals told us that Paul Kelly was playing in a moment and we should grab a seat, so we stayed to watch him play & had a little chat with him, he even paid me a compliment!

Christine Anu: Family friend, saw a lot of her growing up.

Prince: His 50th Birthday gig @ The Basement - was working as assistant engineer / stage hand.

Placebo: Met them in '99 when they toured here, shared a joint with them backstage after a gig in '01 & had them sign a CD - still got it.

Silverchair: Met them a few times at gigs, hung out backstage at homebake '06, I was doing sound for a friend's band.. Bought a Homebake tshirt and had all the acts playing the festival sign it.. still in my wardrobe.

Green Day: Came into the guitar store I worked in, I grabbed a "Hearing Protection Must Be Worn" sign from the construction site next door and had them sign it, it still hangs on the wall in my music room.

Living End: Came into the guitar store I worked in and had a chat, took a photo of them outfront with the sign behind them & one of them with me - not a fan really, but still too cool to pass up.

Spencer Day: Met him at the World AIDS Day festival in Melbourne 2005 while I was working sound, became good friends & see him whenever he's in Sydney.

Axel Whitehead: Met him at the World AIDS Day festival in Melbourne 2005 while I was working sound

Paul Mac (The Dissociatives / DJ): Crossed the road with him outside the building where I work, we said hi.

The Rolling Stones: Mum did some costumes for Mick in the late '60s. Keef also stayed with a good friend of my parents in Singapore in the late '80s a couple of times, and my folks went over to hang out - I was probably with them, but would have been a baby.

Fourplay (The Australian String Quartet, not the US Band): Lara & Veren are family friends, I was assistant engineer on one of their albums

A family friend I taught guitar to (Daniel D'Arcy - Particles) is now winning band comps all over town - the student far surpassed the teacher!

I think that's all the music-related ones.. this is the first time I've put them down on paper (well, screen) so I may have forgotten a couple. If I did the other famous people I've known we'd be here for hours - Mum's been a fashion designer & costume designer for the last 30 or 40 years... her address book is scary.

Edit: knew I'd forget a couple.. added Axel Whitehead & Spencer Day, totally forgot about the '05 World AIDS Day festival..

Sat on Steve Wariner's bus for about half an hour after a show in Hellertown, PA back in '93 or so. Hung around with The Smithereens in Allentown after a gig.

You gave Jennifer Turner guitar lessons! Way to go! She is an awesome player. I've seen her several times playing with Joseph Arthur (BTW, he's an odd one to meet).

Sleepy Labeef, Jim Weider, Leslie West (very odd dude), Corky Lang (nicest guy in the world!), Ritchie Sparx (new bass player for mountain, also super-nice dude), Dave Mason, J. Geils (GREAT guy), Magic Dick. Met all of them when working on the stage crew for a summer at a local music venue.

As a side note, Dave Mason was literaly a JERK. Absolutely dosen't care about talking to you and will not let you get near him. EVEN if your on the stage crew, and his road manager promised that you could get an autograph on your father's traffic album for his BIRTHDAY.

Half met Paul Mccartney once in London...by that I mean we brushed shoulders as he walked by with heather, giggling at the stunned faces of myself and my family!

I was also in the high school jazz band for two years with the lead guitarist of Boys Like Girls, Paul. Nice guy. me and him used to talk about equiptment and guitars in class all the time, were just starting to become friends when he left mid way through his senior year to go on tour...oh well

I'm a Jersey cat, and most of my people come from behind a drum machine.

YOUNG ZEE
Zee is my dude and we twist dutches whenever I am in the dirty dirty. He personally asked me to play guitar for him, then I told him that I suck at guitar. He says I can spell better than anyone dusted, ever - I disagree.

Rah Diggah
"I'm trying to kiss a pretty black girl tonight, and you're the prettiest black girl here." First thing I ever said to the first lady of Flipmode on Telford in the bricks. She cooks a mean breakfast, and owns an AR-15.

Red Man
Homie records in Zee's studio off of telford, spot is relocated to 50's studio in NYC now.

B Boy
Of the "Outsidaz" with Zee and Diggah. B Boy handed me the first gun I held, and the last one I held in the studio off Telford.

Avelanche
Copped that dust in the bricks on a fiend tip.

Murdoch
of the outz. Million dollar mouthpiece that puts snoop on shame.

Noriega
Jeah, jeah, the powder cat. Ate dinner at my table when I was but two years old. My father and him did business, as CIA agents.

Eminem

Oh damn, so jealous. I loved a brief history of time, and i still trip off of it regularly and refer to it when having conversations about time and space, or just our experience of it :) Damn, so jealous. Damn.

Spencer Davis: They played three gigs in the South Bend Area in the late 60s three nights in a row. We were in front of the stage all three nights. By the third evening, they noticed us and we got to go back-stage with them for a while.

Dick Cheney (Twice): First time he was Sec of Def and came to Fort Riley, KS. I was in charge of a demonstration for the M1 Conduct of Fire Trainer. We got in there, I was the tank commander and Dick was my gunner. "No disrespect intended Mr Secretary, but from now on, I call you Gunner".

Second time was May 91. We were waiting to board the aircraft that would take us home from Desert Storm. We were told that our boarding the aircraft would be delayed because the Sec of Def was in the area and they needed some troops for him to talk to. That would be us. When it was over, I made a b-line to the nearest hanger door to get a smoke. It was the same one that he, and all his secret service guys, used to exit the hanger. As he went by, I came to attention and saluted. He looked at me as he was going by. Suddenly he stopped, turned around and came back to me. He said, "How's it going Master Gunner?" He obviously remembered the "Dog and Poney" show that had taken place at Fort Riley.

Goldberg (The wrestler): I was leaving the Camel Roadhouse on 4th and Main in Sturgis, SD. As I was walking out, he was walking in. I say, "Goldberg!" He stops, extends his hand and says, "Hello, sir".

Mainly hockey players... Bobby Orr, Daryll Sittler, Dennis Hull, Tiger Williams. A few musicians... Kim Mitchell, Gordon Deppe. Global News Anchor, Kevin Newman. There are a few other that I can't think of right now.

EDIT - how could I forget this... I met Steve Smith (Red Green) and Pat McKenna (the guy who plays Red Green's nephew Harold) on 2 separate occasions. I ran into Steve at a convention center where he was doing is act and I ran into Pat at Sears on Burlington, ON.
