Today's record store booty:

Led Zep IV- Awesome condition!
Beatles '65- mono version has some noise on a few spots so I'm taking it back and getting a newer stereo version tomorrow.
Grand Funk: Closer to home- Awesome condition!
Beatles: White Album- Awesome condition!
Jimi Hendix: Electric Ladyland- Awesome condition!
Frank Sinatra:
September of my years
Point of no return
Only the lonely- All in Awesome condition!
Rod Stewart: Never a dull moment- Awesome condition!
Elvis Presley: Christmas Album- Has scratch noise but the sound is great so I'm keeping it.

Ya think?

It has a couple of spots on "Honey Don't" that they must've been using an old turntable on it and it kinda sizzles. There's a couple of more copies I can choose from. Maybe try another mono copy?

What sucks is the first side sounds very acceptable. I like the Carl Perkins overs and "I Feel Fine" and "She's a Woman" so I have to have a good copy of those songs on vinyl. Those songs are on the second side.

I gather that Beatle purists think that the records were spoiled by adding the stereo effect. Same with the Beach Boys.

How's that Electric Ladyland? I listened to my vinyl of that last week and most of it was unimpressive (Voodo Chile, Slight Return never sounds bad). I have an '80s copy, which may be the problem.

Well, to be honest I really have to be in a Hendrix "mood" to really appreciate his work. I don't try to force it.
I bought this because it looked pretty clean and listened to a few seconds of a cut on each side and they sounded pretty stunning so I know next time the mood hits I'll be ready.

I got it out of curiousity. I always had the stereo versions and wanted to see what the mono version sounded like. I'd like to have a pristine mono version.

How about a reissue Capitol Records?

Hey, what's kinda funny is I was looking for the Elvis section (which I never found) and saw a shopping basket full of albums so I started looking through it. Some guy came up and kind of panicky says "These are mine!".

Sheese! He had about 40 albums in that basket!

Most of the time the original Mono pressings are worth a ton of $$. Especially Elvis and the Beatles. Sounds like you're like me and mostly in it for the music. But once you start picking up a lot you realize a handful of those rare finds are quite valuable..I have the Goldmine American Standard Record value book. Its nothing but a huge list of values of records sorted by artist. I love thumbing through and seeing what some of those obscure records are worth. Some are shocking..
If I can remember correctly there are numerous versions of the white album. Some are worth very little and some are worth tons. I'll check the book and see and let you know if you;d like...

Chet a Mono Beatles 65 is worth some money. Those are extremely hard to find. You should hang on to that one and just find another in Stereo and have them both. According to my 4 year old record guide it's worth $37.50 in bad condition and $120 in mint condition.

You could sell it on Ebay and even being upfront about the noise on the LP I'm guessing you'd get a decent amount of money for it.

The Beatles have been reissued many times up to 1985 or so when CDs came out.

You can find Purple Label Capitol Records Beatles LPs from the 80's fairly easy. However they sound lousy.

The best sounding Beatles are on Parlaphone EMI from England. Some of the Japanese issues sound great too. Early Capital Records are good... but you should know that Capital remixed the Beatles from day one. Only the non-US Beatles LPs sound the way the Beatles wanted them to.

Also, the Beatles mixed all their LPs in Mono until the White Album. They personally were involved in the mixing. They didn't appreciate stereo and left all the stereo mixes to the engineers in the studio and they went home.

Yes, there is a lot to know about Turntables, Cartridges and other equipment but the subject of Beatles LPs is just as large and detailed.

I came across a lp once, but it was scratched beyond playing, and had no jacket. I didn't buy it, but later wished I had:

It was put out by White/Westinghouse (who made fridges and stoves), and it was The Beatles on one side, and Bob Dylan on the other. Anyone familiar with this? I guess they gave them out in the appliance stores with a purchase?

+1, though the White Album was released in mono in England.

Also, see if the store you got it at can professionally clean it for you; can make a world of difference.

I made another Record Run today since they're so cheap and in such good condition:
Cream: Fresh Cream
Ricky Nelson: Ricky Sings Again- in mint condition.
Elvis: Gold Records 4- sounds OK.
Ricky Nelson: For Your Sweet Love- 1st Decca release.
Ricky Nelson: The Very Best of- wanted a version of "Hello, Mary Lou", "Stood Up" and "Travelin' Man" on LP.
Elvis: The Sun Sessions
Yes: The Yes Album
Cyndi Lauper: She's So Unusual- always liked that record.
Bob Seger: Live Bullet- his best live album.
Bob Seger: Night Moves- a guy I worked with in 1978 played this all day on the day I worked with him moving furniture. Wonder how long he kept it up. Maybe he still plays it.
Roy Orbison: All-time Greatest Hits
Robin Trower: Bridge of Sighs- need I say more?
Elvis: How Great Thou Art
INXS: Kick- I liked that album too. Lots of cool Tele licks in it.
Yngwei Malmsteen Rising Force: Marching Out- always wondered what he sounded like.
Mountain: The Best of
Loverboy: Loverboy
American Graffiti: Soundtrack
Last but not least:
Beatles: '65- another mono version which sounds pretty good.

Hey, I now have good copies of Robin Trower's:
1974 album- Bridge of Sighs
1975 album- For Earth Below
1976 album- Long Misty Days
1977 album- In City Dreams.

A lady with some guy showed him the copy of "Bridge of Sighs" and he snidely commented "He's just a Hendrix wannabe". Glad the dork wasn't interested in it cause it was in like new condition.

I also listened to Bob Seger's "Live Bullet". I especially like the side with "Travelin' Man" I listened to that side twice!

I'd really like to find Elvis greatest hits and Pink Floyd's "The Wall" in album form.

One copy plays good on the first side and the other plays good on the second side. I'll keep both of them.

you could glue them together and have a perfect album!

just joking of course. you made some great finds. not only did you get lots of mighty fine music, the covers alone are classics. one of the things i miss during this cd/mp3 age is all the great album cover art in the large format. it just ain't the same on the little bitty cd covers.

I have a lot of CD's. I just never got around to getting a turntable cause I thought they were just DJ models nowadays. The Technics SL BD20D I just got is a great turntable. It was on sale yesterday for $99.00 but then it went up in the afternoon so I dunno what's going on there. I'd still recommend it though. Just plug it in and play (you do need a phono input on your amp).
I wasn't sure how the turntable would sound with my Radio Shack receiver but it sounds pretty good. I did get a vintage Kenwood KA-7100 Integrated Amplifier that will be coming within the next week and it might be louder but the amp I have now sounds fine. I might just use the Kenwood for my turntable alone.
Yeah, I like the cover art and they have clear plastic sleeves you can put over the albums to preserve them. I want to find some Freddie, BB and Albert King albums next.
