NEW Jimmy Page LP Custom
Like most Les Paul freaks, I look forward to investing in a '59 Les Paul one of these days.
That said, the new Jimmy Page sig Les Paul Custom, modelled after his stolen three pickup '60 with Bigsby, will be released soon. As much as I love taller, fatter frets, and the classic maple topped Standards... I have to admit my first Les Paul obsession was a '57 reissue Les Paul Custom. The very FIRST electric I ever played was a '70s or '80s Black Beauty. Then, I got my '57 and 7 years later it is my go-to guitar in my home studio. Steve Jones as well as Randy Rhoades white Customs got me jonesing for a second LP Custom... Jimmy's new LP Custom may make me put the flame top '59 on hold now...

As someone who loves his '79 Les Paul Standard (pictured below), I think a Les Paul with 3 humbuckers is just overkill. It already has a big, fat, thick, heavy sound. A third humbucker is just too much. The two most perfect guitars, the Les Paul and the Tele, need two and only two pickups, IMO.

The third pickup may never get used, but as my gal would say, its there for the decadence factor.
I'm almost tempted to put a gold Bigsby on my '57 black beauty... So many Les Pauls so few bucks and time. I'd still love to put a minihumbucker and toggle kill-switch in an SG Junior. Still trying to figure out what to put in the neck of my Les Paul Junior's empty slot (yes, it is a Les Paul Junior Lite, not a 2 pickup Special). Perhaps a minihumbucker as well...

thats a great guitar
the BEST thing about a 3 pup lester is the middle pick up sound IMHO-a unique honk played a real 59 3 pup custom a few years back -what a guitar! i just dont think ill be able to choke on the JP license fee to me a CS custom should not cost much more than 3k, maybe a tiny bit more with a bigs -and not be ding ridden, and not a boat anchor-which IS possible -but i dont think the CS ever made a 3 pup version-so whatcha gonna do

Ouch. In that case I'd go for the normal old '57 three pickup Custom with Bigbsy for $4400 :) I just barely chose a 2 pickup for my Custom... I was seriously thinking about the 3 pickup and just installing a Bigsby on my own (have already done it on a ES-135 and an Esquire partscaster). The 3 pickup SG Custom would actually be in line before the 3 pickup Custom... then a flametop, then a Custom3 w/ Bigsby. Too many Gibsons in the queue. Already have 5 Teles/Esquires :)

never owned a 3 pup version , but when i ve palyed i havent noticed it, -but then again owning one is different and id take your word for it fwiw a normal historic custom seems to be advertised for about 4k and ill bet the out the door price is closer to 3400- maybe not now that gibson has tightened its outlets and dealers and raised prices...but thats what id guess -i KNOW that wildwood has em listed at 4-the rest is speculation on dealer margin and list price black customs are pretty wonderful so long as they arent over 9.5-less if you possibly can-but they show every smudge and ding

Doesn't that middle pickup get wired in with the neck, so in the middle position you get an out of phase sound? I don't think it's going to add any extra girth to the sound
