Suggest some "Singer/Songwriter" music
I've always been a fan of Singer/songwriter music, I know it's a pretty generalised term but I mean stuff like - Nick Drake, Tim Buckley, Ray Lamontagne etc etc.
Can anyone suggest some more music like this for me to look into? Thanks. |

Todd Snider - Fantastic lyricist, makes me cry every time. Everybody should check his albums out!
Fionn Regan - Great irish fingerpicker. Get a copy of his debut album "end of history".

Too many to mention actually, but to me David Ackles stands out. He played the piano and sings in a pleasant baritone crooner style, but what I like best about him is his melancholy mood. Most of the songs are so sad it's almost unbearable, but still of utmost beauty.
Start with this one - it's the first one and the easiest accessible, musicaly speaking:http://www.amazon.com/David-Ackles/d...1262812&sr=1-2 He is backed by the Electra house band known as Rhinoceros, which feature Danny Weiss and Doug Hastings on Telecasters and Michael Fonfara on the organ - fantastic band. If this album doesn't make you cry, nothing will... |

keep trying, it took me years to get it. Hated it with a passion at your age, I suspect your being polite about feeling the same.

Ya can't go wrong with folks like Woody Guthrie and Jim Garland (one listen to his "I Don't Want Your Millions Mister" and you will be hooked).
Some of my other favorites: Richard Thompson Steve Earle Lucinda Williams Tom Russell Dave Alvin Warren Zevon Townes Van Zandt Gene Clark & Carla Olson (these two together is something that has to be heard to be believed - they are that good)

I'll add a few:
Ray Wylie Hubbard Jimmie Dale Gilmore Robert Earl Keen (By the way, did you ever notice how singer-songwriter types, especially the Texas ones, seem to go by their full names?) And you just gotta listen to Bob Dylan. Cassady |

IMO the best singer/songwriter out there now is Joe Purdy. he is 27 and has 10 albums under his belt. all of which are great. you can actually listen to all of his albums on his website. www.joepurdy.com
Brian Wright and the Waco Tragedies are another great group. |

lots of good stuff already here -- I'd put in a big +1 for Alejandro Escovedo, "A Man Under the Influence" has been the living room #1 for the last few months. I'd also insist that you pick up a copy of "West of Rome" by Vic Chesnutt and listen to it until you get it. A little rough on first few listenings but a great, great record.
Also, if you don't mind a little estrogen with your meat and potatoes, Aimee Mann has been pitting out great records for a couple of decades now. I'd start with "Lost in Space" or "Bachelor #2" or maybe even the "Live at St Ann's." |

my 3 favorite of the genre
1. Jackson Browne - especially the David Lindley years. (Basically who the Eagles ripped off when they started up) 2. John Hiatt - everything he's ever done. 3. John Gorka- obscure but quality |
