Favorite slide tune?
I have too many to mention, so I'll start with some obvious picks, still two of my favs:
Statesboro Blues, Allman Brothers Highway 61, Johnny Winter Recently heard a cool John Lennon slide tune, Bring On the Lucie (Freda People), during the movie, Children of Men.

Fathers and Sons - Just downloaded that recently. Got Mike Bloomfield on it. I love the albums Muddy did with Johnny Winter - Hard Again, King Bee, and I'm Ready. Great slide work by both of those guys...

I'm mostly into slide when it comes to old blues, so my favorites end up with Elmore James (The Sky Is Crying, Dust My Broom, The Sun is Shining, "It Hurts Me Too" has great lyrics), Hound Dog Taylor, and further back OLD Mississippi Delta stuff from the '20 and '30s (Son House, Charley Patton, Robert Johnson type stuff).
That said, I do like less traditional (blues influenced rock and even non-blues) slide stuff too. George Thorogood, George Harrison, Duanne Allman (though I really dislike the Allman Brothers band). A notable mention is that dude from Godsmack I think. I know, terrible. Anyway, its good to see hard rockers/metal-heads using slide these days. Besides the video was kinda cool to see that slide fall and bust in slo-mo. Their drummer is fun to watch too. IDK why I thought of them, I really dislike their music :)

...frankly,the hippest call thus far...
...was "Anna Lee" by Robert Nighthawk, but his version of "Sweet Black Angel" was my initial thought that occured when I saw this thread, plus, they were both recorded on the same day,so it's kinda apples and oranges regarding preference,as they both have a deep vibe...the secondary thought was "Wah-Wah Blues" by the man who was inspired by Nighthawk,Earl Hooker...you can find the tune on Earl's record on Arhoolie, called "Two Bugs and a Roach"...there's a super cool picture of Earl playing a Gibson Double-Neck on the cover...there's a ton of the obvious names in this thread, but one name missing is Elvin Bishop, and if you've never heard the vocal quality in his approach (refined by listening to gospel singers),you just havn't been paying attention...if you like to be dazzled by feats of fancy, then,by all means, observe the the gymnast's that jump through hoop's,but if you wish to experience a personal voice, listen to Elvin...to each, his own I say...I've always liked "Show Biz Blues" by Peter Green on "Then Play On"...yes Peter, not Jeremy...nice simple part supporting the vocal, with a tambourine rhythm...

almost anything that has lowell george's slide off of "waiting for columbus." imho, some of the best slide, ever. ("mercenary territory" comes to mind)
sonny landreth's "port of calling." amazing, if you dont think so, just try figuring it out... willie johnson's "dark was the night, cold was the ground." haunting, otherworldy, moving and possibly the greatest slide piece ever written and performed and, imho, if you are looking for religion, its here that you'll find it... imho. rand z tropicalsoul.net |

i'll preface this by saying this is not my favorite slide song...it's just very interesting to see John Lennon playing a slide on a National guitar:

Gary Rossingtons slide on FREEBIRD is what made me want to learn how to play slide.
Rickey Medlocke on Train Train is that greasy, gritty, break a beer bottle upside your head, kinda slide that I absolutely love, real roadhouse stuff. Joe Perry on "Draw the line" is a real under rated slide player as well.. Pete Haycock of the original Climax Blues Band was a KILLER player on the FM LIVE album... |

Shake 'em on down - Mississippi Fred McDowell, Terraplane Blues - Foghat, and the slide section in the Joe Walsh/James Gang's Closet Queen/Bolero/Bomber, and the Rolling Stones' live Altamont version of Love In Vain. Sorry I could't pick just one.
