Jamaaladeen Tacuma and Calvin Weston. Awesome YouTube Clip.
Here's a clip of Jamaaladeen Tacuma and Calvin Weston at the West Oak Lane Jazz festival.
For those of you who don't know these guys, they both got their start in the late 70's playing with Ornette Coleman while still in their teens. They've been playing together for over thirty years, and are IMHO, one of the best rhythm sections in the world. The guitar player in this video is sick too. A young cat who plays like a lion. His cd Dreamscape has a heavy rotation in my appartment. They made a fantastic album with the late-great Derek Bailey -who pioneered anything atonal in guitar, without him Marc Ribot would sound like Segovia, Glen Branca would be backing Britney, and Andy Summers's infamous solo on Driven to Tears would be just another verse-, called Mirakle. It is a very interesting experience, but I don't say it is played more than two or three times a year by me. Worth a try for anyone, hey, if you don't like it, at least you'll know how to torture to death your enemies by sonic landscapes. |

that was great... what a rhythm section... loose, funky and totally in the pocket... these guys could have just as easily been part of the philly / MFSB / gamble and huff players as they were coleman's... you sounded great too aram! tj

the Derek Bailey album should be a part of every guitarists collection. I agree, it is an intense listen. But I also feel that time will look back on it as one of the, say, top 100 albums in history.
and if you dig Ribot playing with Jamaaladeen, just two weeks ago I recorded an album that features that same line up. Should be out in the fall. (: |
