the Home Depot-caster (must see)
I came across this and thought it was too good not to share:
http://wellsguitars.com/Gallery/Home...omeDePaul.html The guitar was built from plain wood purchased at a Home Depot. I read about stuff like this and try not to think about how many hours I've spent online researching "tone woods" for my partscasters. I wonder if Home Depot charges a premium for NOS 2 x 10s? |

that's great - ties right into all the pine-build threads here on the TDPRI.
I wish he posted some sound clips (though I don't know how you can really judge a guitar's wood quality after it's been recorded through an amp and a mike into a audio/digital converter, then stored on a disk and sent digitally through some kind of world-wide web to a computer, where it is de-digitalized via a sound-card and played through speakers of varying quality...) |

I'd like to have vintage experts play the depot-caster blindfolded and give their assessment of the wood's tonal properties. |

it'll be interesting to see if the neck holds up over time. will lumber yard necks be the next rage?
i like the whole thing -- nifty idea results in cool guitar.

On recordings done by a good player you cant tell the difference from a $200 guitar and a $2000 guitar. Ive heard this myself when I was a recording studio engineer.

Pretty nice job, especially on the neck .Not the prettiest piece of wood but I really admire his work. On his website he has some beautiful acoustics he's made my favorite is this one Meditareanian sunburst . He has a Tele Model and a Strat Model Electrics . I've never heard of him but I love his acoustic models .

That's incredible craftsmanship. I wonder how long it took him.
However, I hope Fender doesn't catch him with these headstocks. ![]()

I assumed it was made from pine but all he said was 2x10...so its very likely its spruce?
He must have dried it right? I would be amazed if the construction grade piece of wood was dry and stable enough to fashion into a complex shape like a guitar as purchased from a lumber yard.

Around here, 2 x 10 or 2 x whatever is labeled spf...spruce pine or fir and the moisture content is not the same as kiln dried hardwoods. You can buy hemlock for a premium price. I'm guessing he had that wood kicking around the shop for a while so that it could use it without having it warp and split. If you take a fresh lumber yard 2 x 4 and leave it for a year, you can see how it shrinks and warps. The same goes for the pressure treated wood that they used to sell. By the way, I think Taylor made a dumpster wood acoustic and I know that Bob Benedetto made a 2x4 or similar archtop and they supposedly sound really good.
