Limewire??
This may be too off topic for this forum, but I'm pretty naive about this kind of stuff. My kids are always downloading music off Limewire so their dear old Dad thought he'd try it.. I got the program downloaded and actually got a few songs in the library, which is quite a feat with our abysmally slow rural dial-up system. Lately, when I type in the name of a song, a little message box comes up saying something like, "Limewire is currently connecting to the internet; you may not receive many results until the connection is complete." I have never changed anything in the computer since my initial success so I'm "cornfused". Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

When you start up limewire it takes awhile to connect to all the other people using the limewire at the time you load yours up. MIne takes about 1 minute on a cable modem so Id say about 5-7 mins on a dial up before your fully connected.
Look down on the bottm left hand corner there is a signal strength gauge there wait till its full strength before you search or download. Be sure your system is really protected cause there are millions of virus programs inside limewire renamed to look like something else. Never try to install any program that says its name is setup.exe that you got off limewire chances are its a virus.

Beware! Spyware and Adware abounds there at Limewire - at least from my experience. I've decided to cease and desist.

Don't worry about it. Standard fare for the site. It's not adware or spyware. When you are thinking of downloading, always, if you can, download with a listing that has at least 2 sources. Look to the # of MB and if they are around 115 to 120 that is spyware.

I can't wait for GTR's new album to come out so I can steal it he he
If you're listening James , we any closer BTW ? Regarding viruses , I think Gary meant Kb , but you can pick them up in large files too , so best to scan . Just don't download any music made by musicians . Anything made by Simon Cowells company has my blessing . Download them 'till there's none left for anyone else then burn them |

My suggestion would be: Don't do it.

Limewire seriously bites.. try Frostwire, it's free of spyware.
I like Aquisition, but I'm a Mac fellow. it's sad but true: there's about three generations now that don't see any need to purchase music, video, or what-have-you.. the kids just click to download and that's that. not saying it's right or wrong, that's just the way it is.. bands used to get ripped off by their record labels but now the fans are getting into the act as well.

My advice as a network engineer who works with security and privacy who also spent 3 years as a sr. ISP sysop where I've had to and still have to answer to and cooperate with authorities. When you use services like this you need to go in front of a mirror, look at yourself, raise your and and then repeat "I am an idiot" a few times.
Stealing is stealing, legal music can be had for little money and for free. This is my 19th year in positions where I'm involved in privacy and security and I've yet to see anybody who can stand up to who and what's facing them in terms of finance and/or intellect when faced with legal issues of this sort (software licensing, EULA, terms of service etc....). Then there is the frequency that these services compromise your security or add your computer to a bot net even if you never get caught or listed as one who could be caught. I can only think more ISPs are better in the few years since I left the position and at that time I could read every single packet moved in and out of the network I managed and if encrypted could still tell the authorities the source and destination pairs for the traffic. Don't forget that the Internet is the public network. |

Sorry I started this thread.
Like Nazman, I only download the odd song for our band and fully understand the implications of music sharing and all its evils. I have hundreds of cds duly bought and paid for. I have every album Bill Kirchen and the Twangbangers have out as well as all Redd's stuff. I have box sets of Merle Haggard, Johnny Cash, Waylon, Tom T. Hall. The list could go on and on. So I'm not a real bad guy. I was only trying to figure out what I was doing wrong technically. I looked at my Limewire library and I have 24 songs in it, mostly obscure titles.
Once again, I didn't mean to rumple feathers. Brian |
