As long as he put a couple biscuits in there for strength, I'd say it's a very nice job.
If it's a vintage instrument, I might have gone a little further in matching the cosmetics but mechanically it looks to be sturdy and sound. The contours are all beautifully blended. The color match is very good and the repair looks smooth. A real nice job.

should say...I didn`t do the repair...it`s on a guitar I bought yesterday at the local new years sale. I wonder if it isn`t stronger now as thats is often a weak point on Gibsons. The price was just too good to pass on after I saw how well done I thought the repair was, just looking for opinions on it from folks who have more experience with such things.

looks way better than my Les Paul Deluxe's headstock fix.
of course I knocked mine over last year and re-broke the headstock 'cuz I'm a stupid clumsy ******** still totally bummed about that smooth move.

Are you sure it's a repair?..........
I've never checked the Gibsons but some of the Epiphones including a cherry sunburst one that I bought came that way brand new. I went back to Guitar Center when I noticed mine and looked and saw a couple more with that same look. Next time I'm in there I'll look at the Gibsons and see if they're made that way too...........JH in Va.

Yeah, I'm thinking the same thing, that it's just a different piece of wood. Really good neck repairs are usually either invisible (as the wood fibers get fitted back together) or jagged from a bad break. That looks more like two different pieces of wood...
Cheers, Tim

I'm saying I don't think it's a repair at all, I think it's a guitar neck made that way, with wood added during construction.
Cheers, Tim

theres no crack and the break, if it is one, did not go all the through the neck, looks to be a piece of wood that was added, it`s less than 1/8 of an inch thick. The more I look at it the more it appears to me it was done at the factory and now evidently others like it have been seen. Whatever it is...I just couldn`t resisit it at $950.oo...they had it at $2000. oo two weeks ago and even then it was 50% list but I wasn`t willing to pay that much for it...$950.oo was more reasonable and even if I decide to sell it over here I`d get more than I paid, they are mad for Gibsons in Japan...but after a couple of days playing it, don`t think I can let it go now. Ain`t GAS a terrible thing.
Heres a full frontal of the guitar... ![]()

sneaky,
that's a gorgeous looking les paul, and for a great price! is it a historic? i wouldn't be at all worried about that headstock join. it looks solid, and if it means you got an amazing deal, vive la difference! i'm turning flame-green with envy...

First guitar with fret end binding too...and never thought it would make such a difference. I was looking at a bunch of LP double cutaways at the same shop this past summer but they all had very rough, almost unfinished feeling fret ends on em and I was real disappointed...this one doesn`t have that problem. ![]() ![]()
