"Don't ban me but" post removed

Tonight a newish member posted a post about an artist he didn't like, get, whatever. He started the thread with the title "Don't ban me but..."

I started to write him a response and I realized that I was rising to the bait and decided to just kill the thread and email the guy separately.

In general there is nothing wrong with not liking some act, or talent. I don't care one whit about it. But when anyone starts a thread with "Don't ban me... but I'm going to say something totally out of the blue, for no reason at all except that is sure to ruffle a lot of people's feathers." then I call that trolling.

Normally, I'd let this pass unmentioned, but I felt an explanation about where the post went and why might be helpful.

When you think about it- it wouldn't be all that different if someone came on here and said they didn't like the playing of any of the other members:
Mandy Marie
Rockin' Carl
Tim Armstrong
etc, etc, etc...

Bad taste IMHO!

Other members shouldn't automatically agree with the troll tho'.

I miss all those posts before they get yanked. Not that they shouldn't be tossed, I just feel like I've missed out on watching the train wreck.

I don't think he was trying to be a troll he just made a bad choice for a thread title.

It wasn't a good way to introduce himself to the forum....

You could just create your own trainwreck and then you wouldn't miss a second of it.

I did manage to answer him Paul, and I tell you that I bow to your experience and inner voice. Years of working on these things give you a sixth sense about these things. Everybody has your back man.

Well, run right over to "Is Seymour duncan retarded???"....

An excellent example of a train wreck in progress...

Maybe we need a Read Only archive of "Banned Threads" where we can read the stuff that has gotten vaporized from the open forum. (just kidding) But on the other hand, there have to be some real Classics we've all missed.

It sure would be entertaining. Possibly, even educational!

One of the many things that makes this forum different (and much better) than other forums are the very low number of trolls. I suspect that it's a direct result of our excellent webmaster!
Thank again Paul.

the guys was asking what the big deal was about Brad Paisley, he couldn't understand him so he asked about others opinions so he might find out what he was missing. I AM at the exact same spot as he was, I can't understand Brad or countrymusic at all buy I sure would like to try to understand it.. but I guess I can't post a post about that now can I?

Jorge, reread Paul's explanation. I think you missed the point by about a mile.

And he pointed out that the reason that he started the thread was "to ruffle some feathers". Wich clearly wasn't the case, but I might have missed something?

Some guys on other forums do stuff like that just to get thier jollies. Unless you know this guy personally I'd think that it was the case.

BTW- have you ever seen a Brad Paisley live performance? You'd know why a lot of people like him then.

Thank again Paul.
Absolutely! I was a member on the original TDP and the early RI page, but lost touch for years until 2003 when I reregistered and popped on every so often. I'm here every day again because this place IS so well run and for the large amount of people here, I daresay it's as smooth a forum as any out there-like it was ages ago. Many of the same people are still here, which is an amazing tribute to them as well as the people running the show. Kudos to all involved in keeping it that way!

BTW, if anyone ever criticized my playing on this site, I'd probably respect them more because it would demonstrate that they were knowledgeable, honest, and probably very talented musicians!

If they did it constructively then that would be one thing but what's the point of starting a thread where people will just jump on a negative bandwagon?

My favorites are the threads titled "Will somebody please explain [insert topic here]..." My impression is that these posts aren't looking for an explanation, they're looking for an opportuniy to defend their dislike.

The search function.
A simple title search would have yielded 3 full pages of threads with the name.

Why don't you have a ' Sin Bin ' section , where mods can dump a suspected thread for trial . If they become good , replace them , or if not , then delete them .
Sometimes great threads can emerge from a dubious first post .

This would also allow both members new and old to see the type of threads that are borderline , before creating one .
Just my 2 cents
