Hanging your guitar?

I have been wondering how good it is for a guitar to stay hung up for a long period of time? It would be very handy for me not to have to get each of my 3 tele's out of their case every time I wanted to play them. However, I don't want to hang them on the wall if it will damage them over a period of time. Any suggestions on this? They would make beautiful wall decor, so I hope people have had positive experience hanging their teles...

I have had a guitar hanging on the wall for probably 9 years with no ill-effects. My Charvel hung on the wall for probably 7 years uninterrupted (except by occasional playing), and seems completely fine.

I always thought the same.......I never hung mine..But wanted too...Figured all the stress and weight is on the headstock...And figured the guitar neck could get twisted if not balanced when hung.....

I have one of those hangers, that hold the body and the neck, on a slant. No worries about too much stress on the neck, and its looks cool hanging that way. Kind of like this, but a little different.

I've hung about 10-12 guitars on the wall
by the headstock for years with no ill effect. Here's my theory on the physics of weight distrubution. All guitars have a minimum of 3 screws holding the neck to body. In addition the foot pounds measured from bridge (body) to tuners (neck) on a guitar tuned to concert pitch strung with 10's would support the 5-7 pounds of body weight.

My wife has this idea, and I somehow know its going to happen - just don't know when. We just apparently need the right sort of hanger, and are still searching.

I don't think theres any problem with hanging them up by the headstock.

I like it although I've ordered a few neck protectors (bras they call 'em) just to make certain the nitro on my guitars isn't affected by the rubber on the hanger.

I wouldn't think twice if I did it, there's a poor beat Ibanez in a local music store thats been hanging there for about four years, nothing wrong with it from what I can tell.

Now, when you guys hang the guitars on the wall, do you primarily mount the hanger in a stud, or do you use other means?

I just recently hung two of my guitars on the wall. They've been up there for about 3 weeks and I still walk by and check to make sure they aren't gonna fall off. So far so good.

I just used the 2 screws provided and mounted them using those threaded drywall anchors. They work great.

i use the string swings and have no problems. i DO put the hangers into studs. the anchors that boney guy posted are good, but i prefer a hard mounting into a stud.

make sure the headstock and the hanger arms are compatable. adjust the arms to fit the guitar. my tele, strat, & SG have their own individual hanger and no swapping. the tele did slip out once and landed on the futon. no harm no foul but i did learn to set the hanger for the headstock.

besides they look good on the wall and are a better incintive to play than in a case

Don't hang it on a wall that gets direct sunlight, as it could fade or dry the wood. And make sure the wall doesn't get hot from the sun beating on the outside of the house and transferring the heat through the wall to the guitar. My wife had an apartment who's interior wall was too hot to touch during the summer.

Here's how I hung my guitar over an unused fireplace using a hook, a length or coated aircraft cable, and some standard aluminum crimps to fashion loops to go on the strap hooks:

The advantage is there is no weight on the neck.

I've hung mine on the wall for years now. I can't think of doing it any other way.
It is just so nice to grab them one by one when I want to play.

I really like the idea of hanging guitars diagonally, as shown in the above link by "gitarjoe".

The only thing I don't like about that sort of hanger, is that the hooks that cradle the heel end of the guitar are so large and obtrusive. It does look cool, though, when the guitar is displayed at the same angle at which it would be played.
