Actually, just a little New Years harr. We trap & set snares for wolves, lynx, and wolverine as a winter hobby of sorts. Wolverine is frose solid; we pile everything up and skin once it warms up a little. That wolverine is a big one just the same. Figured I better fess up before someone calls me a liar. This other Plott bear hound site I get on; bunch of guys from Sweden on there as they hunt bear with dogs. One of them sent me a pict of his for real pet badger, after he called my bluff, ha.

Anyway, Happy New Years and here's my pet house dogs & my dogteam; these are straight up my pets too.

That's pretty good!! You had me going. I was going to call a friend of mine and say "man, you won't believe this but there is this chick in Alaska that has a pet wolverine" and then get free drinks for the night.
Do you dog sled race? From what I have been told those dogs just LOVE to pull them sleds.

wolverine

I've had some fun with that pict for sure. I've had people ask me if wolverine pups were available, and what I fed it, and on and on. I see 4-5 wolverines every summer, a few lynx around the house, and had to run out with mini-14, unload it in the woods behind my dog lot to run wolves off that were trying to eat my sled dogs. Can't wait till we get some new snow to fill in the rough ice on yukon, so I can run up and down river, like to set snares for wolves in the sloughs and on kills.

I just run my dogs on 70 mile runs 3 times a week, racing is expensive and a lifestyle, not a hobby. Done many a run when its minus 55 & whiteout; forever biting the mitten so you can chip the ice off your eyelids; they freeze shut about every 5 minutes. We feed our sled dogs salmon, but my knees are going from all the cold & jarring around; I couldn't imagine running a 1000 miler when its minus 40-50. That's time to sit back, play geetar, watch hockey, and feed the woodstove.

Whodatpat-it looks like you have all the support and affection a man could ever need taken care of right there in your lap. Your daughter looks like she's pretty fond of the dog too.
Chris-Is that some breed of catfish, and were those worms or lizards? Beautiful fish.

It's a leucistic axolotl, member of the salamander family.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Axolotl
http://www.axolotl.org/

I feed him earthworms mostly, although he occasionaly catches and eats the fish.

I've had a dog, cats, dozens of lizards, hundreds of fish, a few snakes, frogs, crayfish, newts, and on and on. The axolotl is my favorite (although the dog is greatly missed).

Yin/Yang . . .

While the pictures aren't that great, the cats are! We've had Kirby (guess who he was named for) for over 20 years, and he's still going strong - very slow, but strong. The little one is now a year old, and her name is Flake. We rescued both of them from pretty dire, deadly situations, and they have given back to us more than I can ever imagine.

The nice thing is that these two are totally compatible - they really seem to enjoy and depend on each other. I never thought I'd like cats, but now, I can't imagine not having one around the house.

I've never cared much for cats. I always knew when I got a pet it would be some kind of cool dog. Stray animals have a way of changing your mind. When Rocky first showed up, he was so shy he lived in the shrubs alongside the house. He had been declawed, neutered and abandoned, and when I reached out to pet him he would duck like he expected to be hit (hmmmm). Now he's right at home and sleeps in his heated cat bed or on me, the human heating pad. His jackrabbit legs don't quite fit in the cat bed. This was the best pic I could get because he hates the camera flash.

If the previous owners show up, they can have a piece of my mind, but they're not getting my cat.

Dean-they probably know a good thing when they have it. It's my brother's belief that cat's don't have owners they have staff. And what is it about 2-3 degrees today. You are being taken advantage of.

C.A.-If the former "caregivers" show up, I hope you give them more than just a piece of your mind. Like maybe a piece of buckshot or rocksalt. You really have to be a Neanderthal to be cruel to things weaker than you. Bless you for your kindness.

I can honestly say my 2 cats I have now, Gram Parsons & Sneaky Pete are my favourites. I've lost a few animals over the years & it is absolutely heart breaking when they go.

I only saw one Wolverine in my 10 or so years working pipeline projects. I was driving between Pump One and Pump Two on the haul road with 20 below or so and whiteout conditions; waiting for a semi to come buy so I could tail him; they sit higher up and can see a little further.

Anyway, I got out to relieve my self, with the pickup door open to try and keep at least some of it off me, when Mr Wolverine came around the backside of the pickup doing some kind of search and destroy work. I just dang near swallowed my chew, my heart missed a couple beats as I tried to clamp it off, get in the truck, get the door closed, think of something to do if he beat me to it and how to make out the accident report etc. etc. Weird stuff goes through your mind quick, ya know? Anyway, I must have surprised him too because he took about a 15 yard detour around the pickup then went back to the side of the road and resumed his march until he disappered into the white. Unforgetable.

Chloe, on the left, and Bruno. Bruno was bought from a breeder in Missouri 2 years ago as a birthday present for my wife. Chloe is a dog from the Brussels Griffon rescue organization that my wife found on the internet. Someone, probably a man because she will not get close to any male humans, had abused her, broke her foot with something, set her back on fire, she was a basket case for about a year. She still will not get within 15 feet of me. She loves my wife and my mother-in-law though and she now has a good home. I took this picture from about 20 feet away and you can kinda see that she really doesn't trust me by the look in her eyes. Bruno is quite the opposite everybody is his buddy.

I've seen sled dogs get into it with wolverines in traps along the trail. They get tore up too but survive as the wolverine is limited by trap chain. Funny thing is they usually go back and tangle with wolverine a second time before you can shoot the wolverine.

Once I did a fly in out in Innoko River country. Shot a moose along a lake, was cuttin him up and saw another bull across the lake. They smell of the dead moose someway makes other moose not so scared. Anyway, I called the second bull entire way around that lake, maybe 1 1/2 miles and my buddy shot that second bull when it was within 50 yards of the first dead bull. We gutted the second bull and went back to working on the first one. Then here comes a wolverine, jumps up on gut pile of second bull and starts eatin away. When he saw us looking at him, he showed us his teeth and growled up a storm. Then after he had his full, off he went. I could have shot him but didn't even cross my mind.

They are not as tough or smart as their reputation, we catch them in bucket sets with conibears. Pretty solitary, and you only find maybe one in a creek drainage. I see a few out and about every summer and they steal marten outta my traps in winter but they sure make nice fur hats that come down your back.

Tim-It looks to me like Sneaky Pete is well named

Skybolton-In all honesty I just about fell off the chair I was laughing so hard. I would have been protecting the property if you get my drift.

BBC-Bless you for doing what you have done for that poor animal. I would just love to meet up with the person who did it. Good for you, man.

One other thing
Zhurh-you sell those hats? We rarely hit -100 but I would love to have one of those wolverine hats for winter.

Guys, lock up your cats!

I really hope that if Aliens come to Earth that they don't like the feel of human-skin jackets...

...surely they'll be more intelligent than that.

Hey who's to say that the Aliens will be able to take us out? I personally am ready to take on any Venutians or Martians. Bring em on. Who knows, they might be good with Devil's Spit or Ken Davis.

favorite ever was the first cat that seemed to think of itself as mine rather than the families - Chester, a fluffy black cat who disappeared one day (back before it was the norm to keep cats indoors all the time)

for now, there's my calico, Buffy

wish I had the room for a retriever or Aussie cattle dog, but no dice
