I've been dreaming of getting into a regular practice routine, but it just isn't happening. I get up at 5:00, go to work, get home at 5:00, do chores, dinner, and dishes and it's 9:30. Take the dogs out and get ready for bed. Sleep 6 hours and start over again. I just had 2 weeks off from work and noodled for a total of 15 minutes.

You don't have to practice anything specific, but almost anything you do will be good for muscle memory, ear training, and familiarity with the fingerboard. |

I'm really inconsistent with practising...sometimes it seems I play the whole day, and other times it seems like a week goes by and I haven't picked up the axe - which is of course bad. I'm not one of those guys who can sit down for 30 minutes a day every day and follow some routine - I've tried it and each time naturally just fall out of it. I spent most time composing or playing songs rather than practising scales or licks.

Well I didn't want to get in to that but ... yeah, I normally don't get up until about 9:30 am (lol!) and I can barely even communicate for another hour. I am also fortunate in that I rarely have to do anything until about 1:00 in the afternoon.

The good thing about playing a musical instrument is you can find enjoyment playing a little or a lot. I fall into the alot category. If I don't practice/play/gig 3-5 hours per day I get ansy. I just finished my 3 hours today by learning some new stuff for an upcoming gig (requests from NYEve gig) and going over some old stuff we have not played in awhile.
I get home from work about 3:30 and generally start about 5. Do 1.5 hours before supper and 1.5 or more after supper. Weekends at least 4 per day. I handle about 40% of our vocals so I am not just playing instrumentals. This is just what I like to do so it is no big deal. The easy way for me to get started is to work on a new song. After about 15-20 minutes of that I go into the sets and the time flys by. |
