Lo How a Rose E'er Blooming. This version is my favorite - the last verse is non-traditional, but the arrangement works. Cool chord changes, and bizarre timing - the sheet music says "slowly slow down". Love instrumentals, but I think a large choir does it best.

Merry Christmas, denny

  • Silent Night - sung to the original Austrian arrangement of Franz Gruber, by the Trapp Family Singers. *
  • The Christmas Song by Nat King Cole
  • O, Holy Night
  • God Rest Ye Merry Gentlemen

The melody that is sung today in the US differs slightly (particularly in the second and final strains) from Gruber's original, which was a sprightly 6/8, as opposed to the slow, meditative 3/4 lullaby version generally sung today. Look at the first half of bar 3, and the final vocal line melody.

I grew up in the late 50's and early 60's so was heavily influenced by the "Chipmunks" and "Charlie Brown", (even more so than Dylan and the Beatles), and probabaly above and beyond that, lead in the drinking water. My youngest daughter when she was about two began singing "The First Noel" as "Oh Well...oh well....oh well....oh well", so that rocketed to the top of the charts with a bullet along with the old X-Mas classic, "Check the balls on uncle Charlie...fa la la la la....la la...la la". Pretty old school in this regard and stay with the X-Mas classics.

It's hard to think of one that isn't my favourite.
"I'll Be Home For Christmas" used to shatter me because I was so far away.
"Silent Night" brings back a flood of memories too.
"Sleigh Ride"; just being in Boston.

I guess they're all my faves.

“The Christmas Song”, commonly subtitled “Chestnuts Roasting on an Open Fire“ or “Merry Christmas to You.”

I can't believe nobody else has mentioned it yet: "Rockin' Around The Christmas Tree", as performed by Brenda Lee.

No love for the The Chairman of the Board?

Pretty much everything on this album is awesome. Just beautifully arranged and sung. My favorite is probably "The Christmas Waltz" ... this song of mine / in three quarter time.

I'm also a big fan of Booker T and the MGs "In the Christmas Spirit".

As a kid, my parents had a record by Fred Waring and the Pennsylvanians. The album cover had a Norman Rockwell illustration on it. One side was traditional and the other a novelty recording that was worn out from being played so much by us kids, we loved it. It was comical had lots of sound effects and sounded like they had a great time recording it. Rousing renditions of Jingle Bells, Rudolf the Red Nosed Reindeer (a drunken one) and Night Before Christmas.

Fred Waring is the inventor of the drink blender that bears his name (so I've been told) maybe had something to do with the mood of the record.

Even as adults, it was not Christmas until that scratchy old album was played and everyone sang along.

Anyone else familiar with it?

Vince Guaraldi's "O Christmas Tree"
"O Come O Come Emmanuel"
"Let All Mortal Flesh Keep Silence"
Otis's "Merry Christmas Baby"

And we always decorate the tree to the strains of Alligator Records' Christmas album. Yep, Santa Claus Wants Some Lovin'. :-)

[quote=bingy;2195046]I'm surprised I'm the first one to mention "This Christmas" by Donny Hathaway.
Released in 1970 this song is gaining in the public consciousness.

You're not the first...I was, check post No.31. I was just too lazy to post a video. Its cool, easy to see how my post could've been overlooked. Not a big deal obviously. Just busting your chops a little. Great Song.

You have good taste in Christmas tunes . Have a Merry Christmas!

Adeste Fidelis is probably my favorite Christmas song.

And of course Handel's Messiah - not one song but an amazing piece of music.
