Eric Clapton blues question

I have always thought that EC was just ok. I have only heard the hits like Cocaine and layla until I stumbled across this.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=apeu0am5LZQ

I love this type of blues to say the least. Where can I hear or buy more of EC doing this and are there more guys that play like this. I am illiterate when it comes to the blues, I have never heard some play that I probably should have. I have heard some of B.B. and SRV but most of their stuff I do not like as mucah as this.

I can't watch youtube at work, but I bet its from the "From the Cradle" Tour.

BTW, to answer question, get the "From the Cradle" album. Probably my favorite EC album besides the Cream stuff

Man oh man oh man. You gotta listen to his Derrick and the Dominoes version of this song. The intro gives me chills. You also gotta listen to the Bluesbreakers Beano album ("featuring Eric Clapton").

Yeah, I'd say the Derek and the Dominos "Layla and Other Assorted Love Songs" version is a lot stronger. There're several good tracks on that album.

"Nobody Knows You (etc)", "I Looked Away", "Key To The Highway", and "Tell The Truth" also make that one worth owning.

The John Mayall album has some very strong playing on it.

I've found that if you steal enough Freddie King licks, you start to sound just like Eric Clapton

He has a double CD titled simply "Blues" that is very good. It's studio work on one side and live on the other, and I don't think they're recycled cuts from other albums, though he's recorded some of the songs on other works.

There is a two hour PBS documentary that features the "From the Cradle" Cd. He does a KILLER version of crossroads on the set. If I can get it to post I will. The whole 2 hour special is filled with various interviews with the, no pun intended, Heavyweights of blues.
GO GET THE CD. It was all cut live and most are 1st takes. Very cool.
This is however from the Martin Scorsese work on the History of the blues.

Also get "Just One Night". It is a live disc from 1980 that is outstanding. Plus Albert Lee is his other guitarist so you kinda get a double feature.

Thanks for posting asatbender!

When I first started playing guitar, my guitar teacher used to say "there are at least 2 people in every suburb of Sydney that can play better than Clapton..."

....for me though, it isn't what he plays but how he plays it.

This is one of the songs that made me want to play guitar in the first place...

One of the best (IMHO) fairly recent things EC did is the George Harrison tribute. Killer version of "While My Guitar Gently Weeps," and he shows his true depth playing Indian music.

Clapton is a preeminent historian of the blues: Magic Sam, Freddie King, Otis Rush

If it's Clapton video you're after, the 2004 Clapton Crossroads Festival has some really great stuff - especially late in the second disk, with Blues in C, and a version of Rollin & Tumblin, or Possession over Judgment Day - whatever it's called on that take.

The 2007 Crossroads festival isn't as good, perhaps, but I've only seen it once so far. The Blind Faith stuff with Winwood, especially Had to Cry Today, looks pretty great.

On Clapton's CDs, the MTV Unplugged session is first rate, with four or five real keepers like Hey Hey, and Malted Milk. Also, the Me and Mr. Johnson CD is pretty good, although I like the live and acoustic stuff better.

One more thing, if you like great blues, you simply have to check out Joe Bonamassa. His Blues Deluxe CD makes me wanna quit playing guitar, or quit work and play all the time, either one! There's some cool video of him here:

Just ok? Well, he's not the best who ever lived, but he is on a John Mayall and The Blues Breakers album playing very strong stuff. Very powerful knock-yer-sox-off stuff. Not fancy, just terribly terribly bold and fearsome. He's done some good stuff since then (like Crossroads and the solo on White Room and lots of other things), but I love that Blues Breakers album better.

I've always been a huge Clapton fan, especially the early stuff. Cream was amazing, but Derek and the Dominoes were my favorite lineup.

This is probably my favorite EC vid...So much emotion! Standing out there sweaty in a t-shirt.

That white Strat is delicious, too.

as far as Freddie King CD's I would start with "Texas Cannonball" and "Freddie King is a Blues Master" "1934-1976" has some cool stuff on it as well... "Freddie King Sings" has the original version of "Have You Ever Loved A Woman" on it... I think the reason EC is so well thought of by the masters is that he has never taken credit for what he plays. He always points to the masters. He will be the first one to tell you he stole every Freddie lick and Albert lick he could, for that I give him great respect.

Right...

From

On the back of the Album entitled, "Freddie King (1934-1976)" is this quote, "He taught me just about everything I needed to know...when and when not to make a stand...when and when not to show your hand...and most important of all...how to make love to a guitar." Eric Clapton, July 1977. I've been listening to Freddie King for just about forever. The man simply rocks.

The very first Blues CD I bought is a Freddy King on. I was hooked on Blues from that day...

And he can play in BB King style too...

Sorry... I love his playing

Someone's got to say it, it's good because he's playing a Gibson. Clapton is better on a Gibson.
