I use a digital delay and a Whammy pedal, yet not wanting this thing makes me a purist...

Not that far off topic and not that odd. Funny how you responded twice to "off topic" posts and then complained about it.

+1

I think it's a great innovation if it works. And I think it'll be a hit...with pros and amateurs alike.

I play mostly in standard but like to go to drop D, open G, and open D at times too. Be nice to do that "on the fly". If that makes me a lessor musician so be it.

That's only because they tricked me!

I was tired and didn't notice right away.

The system won't make anyone a lesser musician, but according to the GC manager, you'll lose your PURIST status!

Good luck! Keeping a thread on topic is at best a toss up. Sometimes people want to discuss the topic, sometimes not. It happens in face to face conversations too.

Thank you for that, but I have seen plenty of guitarists who are tuning constantly.

Why do I feel like I have just been given a great big complement by the teenagers at GC?

Look, if you really want guitar technology there's only one thing...

Guitar hero. No tuning required.

See, the problem is that the Banjo Center manager doesn't have a large enough vocabulary!

He said "purist" when he meant "Luddite"!

Glad I could help!

Cheers, Tim

Here are your options:

1. Tune between songs annoying the audience and slowing down the pace of the show. Worst for the audience, cheapest for the guitarist.

2. Have a guitar tech tune another guitar offstage and switch guitars between songs. Better for the audience, very expensive for the guitarist.

3. Get the self-tuning guitar. Best for the audience, in the long run cheaper than a roadie.
The new VG Stratocaster can do several tunings without you touching the tuning keys. The day is coming soon when you won't need to tune your guitar at all. No the guitar won't adjust the strings to keep them in tune, it'll just pay attention to what you are doing on the strings and output the corresponding adjusted tones, ignoring the actual tuning of the strings. You'll just adjust the strings for the "feel" you like (loose or tight) and the guitar will output the correct(ed) tone.

The guitar is the most rapidly developing/evolving instrument

Did you ever stop to think that there is no instrument which is evolving as quickly as the guitar? Not just the hardware, but the playing techniques (tapping, for example). Have any new flute playing techniques popped up in the last 100 years?

I feel sorry for the people who will become so used to the guitar tuning itself that they won't know what to do when the battery dies at an inopportune moment. Nah, just kidding. I'll be laughing my hinder off.
