Scotland Forever
Bono, lead singer of the rock band U2, is famous throughout the entertainment industry for being more than just a little self-righteous. At a recent U2 concert in Glasgow, Scotland, he asked the
audience for total quiet. Then, in the silence, he started to slowly clap his hands, once every few seconds. Holding the audience in total silence, he said into the microphone, "Every time I clap my hands, a child in Africa dies." A voice with a deep and sharp Scottish accent from the crowd pierced the silence... "Well, foockin stop doin it then, ya evil bastard!"

HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA!!!!! I like that Bono is trying to make things better, but sometimes he really is a bit too self-righteous. That is a great story! |

I've heard that one before but it was supposed to be Dublin. That has the added chuckle of a hometown bringing one of their own back down to earth with a bump! lol

Every time I clap my hands some billionaire musician tries to get struggling people to give their money to charity when said billionaire still seems to be alarmingly rich.

It's funny when they do that... but if you think about it, how would they know how when African children die? Do they get the number of deaths in a year and average it?
And what about adult Africans? Are their lives worth less? |

Believe it or not, Newfoundland!
It never occured to me that U2 may never have even played there. Just sounded like something our common sense tough talking Newfs would say! As with all urban legends, it doesn't matter if it's true or not, just as long as it's a good story! |

That internet joke, lie, faux truth, urban legend, trick, whatever has been posted on the TDPRI now a total of 3 times over the past two years. The first two times it turned into endless fights over U2, Bono, and world politics.
Lets not repeat that part again. OK? |

in my mind it's similar to the fact that the lives of cute and cuddly animals seem to be of vastly higher value than the possibly more ecologically important uglies of the animal world. i don't read newspapers anymore. they make me too angry.

It is not my opinion that adult lives are worth less, but generally, since children are seen as helpless and in need of care, if the purpose is to motivate people to care about the problems in a far away land they will use the statistic that shocks the most which would result in the greatest amount of giving to solve the problem. I read recently that 35K africans die each day from starvation. I believe that includes adults. As for not reading papers or paying attention to the news... it is certainly a choice to avoid what is going on, and it is absolutely daunting to think of all the suffering that exists... my wife and I donate to charities we think will do the most with our money, we participate in Kiva, and we volunteer locally in a variety of activities to make sure we are actually DOING rather than just PAYING. I don't mind when people who are famous are socially or politically active nor if they take a couple of minutes out of the entertainment to share their ideas... it is interesting to know what they are thinking and how it informs their art. Like anyone else, I love wisecracks and think the joke is funny as a wisecrack and 'preciousness' can be annoying... I remember being wildly drunk at a bonfire in grad school and a very, very drunk guy started shouting "What about Sadat?" over and over again, whereupon he lost his footing and fell into the fire... everyone stood there staring and I grabbed the guy (Kevin) and pulled him out and brushed the fire off of him... he was still shouting "what about sadat?" I looked at him and said, "Dude, it is hard to take you seriously when you have an ember stuck in your face." and I flicked it out of his burned cheek and everyone laughed although they were unsettled by his drunken outrage, their inability to respond to an emergency and the tension of grad students hoping desperately to: A) Have fun B) Possibly get nuded up with another grad student C) Not do anything career limiting (like fall into the fire or shout protests at a party.) I have no idea what this has to do with the Bono thing (that Bono didn't actually do) but it still makes me laugh.
