How about "Rock & Roll" / Modern Christmas Music
What are our favorite "Rock and Roll" Christmas music tunes?
Not remakes of the classics or classics performed by R&R era bands but songs representing the holidays in some way that are modern originals. I can think of 4: ELP - I believe in Father Christmas The Kinks - Father Christmas The Pretenders - 2000 miles John Lennon - Happy Christmas Hope I didnt take them all. There has to be more right? I want to compile a collection of modern tunes that my daughter and I can play for the family on Christmas day this year. |

I would have to put Band Aid's "Do They Know It's Christmas" at the top of my list.
Also, I know this might cause some flaming, because it was America's answer to Band Aid and it was a much more mainstream, commercial, and typically US music industry effort, but USA For Africa's "We Are The World" is really a well written song (Michael Jackson, I believe), superbly produced, and it amazes me that all those different voices can fit together in one song. For years I've had the words written out for both these songs with the singers listed so I can remember who sang what (although for "We Are The World" many of them are obvious). Happy Holidays |

The Barenaked Ladies do a clever version of "Jingle Bells".
The Chris Isaak Christmas disc is fantastic all the way through. Sarah McLachlan does a great version of "The First Noel". The Barenaked Ladies & Sarah McLachlan did a great job on "God Rest Ye Merry Gentlemen/We Three Kings" One of my personal favorites is the Cocteau Twins cover of "Frosty The Snowman". U2's "Baby, Please Come Home For Christmas" is great. And, of course, there's the Boss with "Santa Claus Is Coming To Town".

I dig Clarence Carter's "Backdoor Santa", though B.B.'s ain't too bad either and Collective Soul's take on "Blue Christmas".

I always liked the one-two punch of Bobby Helms "Jingle Bell Rock" and Brenda Lee's "Rockin' Around The Christmas Tree". both are "oldies" for sure but they are lots of fun and both have some tasty guitar licks. i've heard several modern cover versions of these two, but the originals are best.
Brian Setzer Orchestra does some pretty snazzy Christmas tunes, and his version of "Santa Claus Is Back In Town" is a good one, though Elvis really nailed that tune down back in the day. my wife is a big fan of The Eagles "Please Come Home For Christmas", and it is good even if the guitar solo is too short. |

Yes, "Christmas Island" is great.
Heck, I still love to hear Elvis sing "Blue Christmas" and Willie sing "Pretty Paper." The Chietans' "The Bells of Dublin" is my favorite Christmas album. I also used to have one by John Fahey that was really good.
