Barney Fife - a question.

Why the heck does Barney affectionately call Andy "Ange"? Have you ever noticed this? I've known a few Andys in my day, but I've never known anyone to call them "Ange".

It's almost as if Barney is using a shortened version of "Angie".

Should we be concerned about this?

I always assumed that it was his abbreviation of "Andy". Barney had his personality ticks. Unloaded gun/one bullet in the shirt pocket.......the man had issues.

Yep, Sheriff Taylor. So much for the Andy G theory.

Andy used to call barney barn

The boy's and girl's name Angy \a-ngy, an-gy\ is a variant of Angel.

The baby name Angy sounds like Ange, Angie, Inge and Ingo. Other similar baby names are Algy, Andy and Augy.

Angy is a very rare male first name and a very rare surname (source: 1990 U.S. Census). Displayed below is the baby name popularity trend for the boy's name Angy. Click here to compare Angy with related baby names.

It might just be something that Don Knotts came up with, and they started writing it in.

Barney Fife was pretty cool, even though he was a really awkward character. That show probably owes it's popularity to Don Knotts more than anyone, Not that the others didn't do what they did really well. Floyd was great too.

That was a great TV show, small town America at its best.
I'm glad the re-runs are still on.

Floyd.

Floyd was on a whole different plane of creativity and consciousness. To me, "Floyd" isn't so much a person or a character - it's really a philosophy...or even an entity in itself.

I always thought it was cool how he stayed on the show after his stroke. His manner changed a bit, and I almost think he was funnier in that phase.

In the 80's I had a bright pink t-shirt with his likeness on it - Pink Floyd. I loved it.

If you say the two-syllable name "Andrew", most people say something that sounds like "Anjrew". As an Andrew, I've heard this my entire life. My guess is that Barn was making one syllable out of Andrew, hence Anj. Andy is still two syllables, so not much less work to say as far as nick-names go.

I don't think he ever said "Anj". I think it was simply "And" short for Andy.

"Ange" was Barney's nickname for Andy, kinda of a term of endearment.

With the exception of the bumbling, Barney's size and excitement always reminds me of my dad. My dad, when he was younger, was always hyper and wirey.

As a kid growing up in the 60s, I just thought his character was so funny. Somehow his humor spoke to all ages. How rare that is. He allowed us kids to see the humor behind ego and self-importance in a way that maybe we couldn't see anywhere else. Maybe Mark Twain.

I've read that CBS did not like its image as a the network of hick shows (Mayberry, Petticoat Junction, Green Acres, Beverly Hillbillies--aren't these all CBS?). So, at the height of some of these shows' popularity, these ditched some. I'm not sure which ones. I think Mayberry hung around for a while as Opie grew up. Not sure about the others.

Andy Griffith and I shared the same illness. We both were affilcited with the Guillain-Barre Syndrome. One's autoimmune system attacks the nerve sheaths. It is more or less temporary, but hell to go through. This happened to him when he played the lawyer on TV (Matlock?).

don't be too concerned about the "ang" thing. on the other hand...erotic dreams about Aunt Bea would be something to worry about!
