No Country for Old Men, Texas 1980
I just saw this movie yesterday, and I am thinking about seeing it again.
IMHO, it is a really good movie. The most terrifying villan I have seen in quite a while. I don't know how they made a guy who looked like a 1960's folk singer so scary, but they did. See it! |

The thing I liked about the movie was the randomness of all the mayhem. You're out hunting antelope and find 2 million dollars. You're working in a rural gas station and the next thing you know your life is being wagered on a coin flip. And through it all walks Anton Chigurh. Inevitable as death and taxes.
Movie of the year ![]()

I absolutely loved the book and when I had heard that the Coen Brothers were making the the film it became a must see. They did a fantastic job of adapting the book. It is a great film. And as far as the violence goes it is far from being Cormac McCarthy's most violent offering. Also, it is one the themes in the book/film. Sherriff Bell was always a step behind, He was overwhelmed by the violence as well. He retired because times had changed and he was now out of his element.

Good performances, and I did enjoy it alot, but I felt like it lost most of its steam about two-thirds of the way in. Folks who know the story can probably guess the point I'm talking about.
If you like No Country, you'll love Tommy Lee Jones's The Three Burials of Melquiades Estrada. Tommy Lee stars and directs, and it holds onto you beginning to end. Not as bloody as No Country, but more suspenseful, in my humble. And Reno, if you like lots of random oh-nos piling up on you, rent Redrock West: Nicholas Cage, Dennis Hopper, Lara Flynn Boyle, J.T. Walsh, Dwight Yoakum. Too much fun. |

Saw it last weekend, thought it was very good...un-Hollywood for the most part, which is a big plus for me. Didn't mind the ending (but then I LIKED the Sopranos ending!) I thought TLJones was funny as hell, he just gets a look that cracks me up sometimes...
Best, Tom

i LOVED the book and was really skeptical to see a movie adapted from it, but holy mackerel. It may be the best and most accurate adaptation of a book i've ever seen. the movie looked EXACTLY the way i imagined it when i read it. the actors. the scenes. everything.
the best part being that they didn;t go "hollywood" and change the ending. which may annoy the typical hollywood movie goer. 5 stars!!! i don';t buy DVDs of many movies. but I WILL buy this DVD when it comes out.

Oh yeah, The Three Burials Of Melquiades Estrada is one of my favorite movies - but then again, how could a movie featuring Levon Helm and Dwight Yoakam as actors be bad...? Lots of great music on the soundtrack, too.

Tommy Lee Jones performance in No Country was very reminiscent of his performance in 3 Burials.
Both great movies I think the best part of No Country is the ending. Very unsettling. A great film noir. I havent been that unsettled about an American movie since Pulp Fiction. Good stuff. |

An amazing piece of film. Josh Brolin did a terrific job (he also just had a pretty incredible turn in American Gangster) along with the rest of the cast. Comac can really write. Great movie.

Yesterday it was a church, today it's a school bus stop. I'll take a Coen Brothers or a Sam Peckinpah movie our the daily "news" any day. Great movie, BTW.

I always give out bonus points to any movie that has Levon Helm, Dwight Yoakam or Michael Madsen in it.

re: no country
big fan of cormacs writing and i was worried that the adaptation to film would fall short but i found myself enjoying the film version also - anyone else notice the film had no musical score ? none ? it was kind of erie at first but i think that fit the mood of the film - i mean, do you even know how crazy you are ? - i'm not a complete idiot ... some parts are missing - |
