Played my first ever 'gig' last night

Well, it was just one song but, man, what fun. My guitar teacher invited me to sit in with his band when I felt ready. He suggested 'Keep Your Hands to Yourself' would be a good first song. So I practiced it for about 3 weeks (thanks again to martyb1 here at TDPRI for the backing track!) and decided it was go time.

So, barring the panic attack I had at work during the day yesterday, I stepped in with the band after their first break (my teacher actually stepped out and sat in the audience) and remained surprisingly calm. It went better than I had hoped! The band was trying to get me to play a few more songs with them and kept throwing out "How about <insert song titles>?" [Note: They were trying to get me to play more songs NOT because I was good, but because they're nice guys.]

Anyway, I decided to leave the evening on a high note and not try to wing it on a song I only partially know. What a blast!

Good for you and welcome to the brotherhood of gigging.

Hardest thing for a later starter is getting started--sounds like you nailed it!

What's your next move? Maybe learn a couple more songs and sit on an Open Mic somewhere? New talent always welcome there!

Keep pickin' !

Way to go! Good call on sitting down after one song, leave them wanting more. Learning to play within your limits is the sign of a good musician.

Wow...thanks for all the kudos everyone. Yes, I'm definitely hooked now. Next move? Learn a couple more songs and maybe I can play 3 next time. The one song went by so fast it's still just a blur...but the good feeling is still hanging around.

I'm not sure about any open mic nights around here...may have to look into that when I've gained a bit more confidence...and know more than one song. heh

Congrats! You should now celebrate by purchasing a NEW amp. You deserve it.

That is too awesome for words, man. I hope to post something similar soon. Thanks for showing me it can be done.

Good for you! I've always admired folks who can get up in front of a crowd and perform. I can jam with friends in the garage and that but otherwise I have big time stage fright...
