Gibson Faded Double-Cut LP Special at Guitar Center
Some of you may remember me posting about my GAS for a Gibson Faded Double-Cut LP Special that the GC up the road marked down to wholesale (($419) to get rid of them... They had two brown ones in stock for over a year, one on the floor, one still in the box.
Then, there was my post about my further dilemma--whether I should just go for the Gibson, or look long and hard at a PRS SE Soapbar II that they had used for $299.... Anyway, I played hookie from work a little bit and went to GC for an hour this morning to use my 20% off card. Needless to say, it was jammed--we're talking barely enough room to move. I went in, managed to find the PRS, and gave it a whirl... It just wouldn't work for me, and I could tell it the split-second as I fretted the first chord... Cool, problem solved, the Gibson is the one for me. Anyway, I found the floor model Faded Double Cut, took it off the rack, nabbed some other goodies, then made my way through the long line to the checkout. When I got to the head of the line, I asked the guy if they had another of the same guitar that was in a bit better shape that the floor model was, because it looked like it'd been used to beat unruly teenage Zakk Wylde wannabees into submission... They guy said that they had just one more, and it was still in the box. He ran in the back and in a couple minutes came out with the guitar. I told him that I'd take it. I figured that because it was a wholesale deal, the 20% off card I had in my pocket would not be good on the guitar, but he asked me if I had my card with me and wanted to use it on the guitar.... Needless to say, I said "SURE!!! NO PROBLEM!!!!" and handed over the card.... The guitar came home with me for a measly $335 out the door... It's not quite in the realm of Ed P's $149 Gibson Faded Cherry SG Special, but hey, I'm totally cool with this deal... |

$335??!!
Nice! Good call asking if they had one in the back... this is a great story and it makes me feel as if I experienced GAS relief myself! I LOVE LP Juniors and the like... very cool!!! Photos?

That's a cool guitar and congrats on the score. That's cheaper than a MIM standard strat.
Now you need to plug it into a tube amp, crank the volume and let those p90's growl into some natural burning overdrive, baby. I can feel it now.

Well, the intonation is now set, the action is in the "acceptable" range, and the pickup outputs are balanced.... I'll probably tweak the neck a bit more, but it's very playable as it sits now...
While I was at the GC, I was test-driving the floor model through a Peavey JSX, because it was the closest thing they had to my Peavey Triple XXX. Once I got the necessities over with, I had to let it rip a little, and believe me, this baby will wail through the Triple XXX... Balancing the clean volume channel output so it's fairly clean when I'm going light on the pick but going over the edge when I dig in, it's got serious tone... When I kick it into the Crunch or Ultra channels with a liberal dose of gain applied, we're into complete screaming meltdown territory.... Now, I gotta take some 0000 steel wool and slick this baby up... Better get me some straplocks, too. It's seriously light, and you can feel every strings vibration against your torso when playing it... Plenty of sustain, tone worth killing for, and dirt cheap--what's not to totally love about this guitar? |
