I Only Listen to Instrumental Guitar Only

Yep. Instrumental guitar only. I haven't been listening to music with lyrics for the last few months. I can listen to other instruments but mainly guitar only. Not a real fan of country but that might change.

Below is a list of Artists I listen to:

Acoustic Alchemy
Al Di Meola
Armik
Andy Timmons
Ed Bickert
Emily Remler
Fourplay
Guthrie Govan
Howard Roberts
Jeff Beck
Joe Pass
John Scofield
Justin Cash
Kenny Burrell
Larry Coryell
Lee Ritenour
Martin Taylor
Pat Martino
Pat Metheny
Philip Catherine
Ottmar Liebert
Santana (some old ones)
Scotty Anderson
Tommy Emmanuel
Tuck Andres
Ted Green
Wes Montgomery

Sometimes

Joe Satriani
Steve Vai
John Petrucci

And of course, a lot of clips from Twanger Central.

You're welcome to give me suggestions of other artist/s not on the list.

You missed the TDPRI's own...

Bill Hullett, Greg V., and Jimmy Wilsey, as well as Richard Bennett. Sometimes fewer notes say more.

I get on those instrumental music kicks too. I like a lot of the one's you've mentioned. I just got Andy Timmon's - That Was Then, This is Now a couple of weeks ago and love it, although it's been out for 5yrs. There are a couple of instrumental rock albums that Doug Aldrich did back in the mid 90's that I just discovered. They are called Highcentered and Electrovision. If you like Timmons you will probably like these. Unfortunately, I believe the CD's are only offered as Japanese Imports and are rediculously expensive. Even used they are overpriced.

Ottmar Liebert is fantastic! What a life, to be inspired by nature out in the New Mexico desert. He creates some of the most beautiful flamenco/classical music. His live DVD, Wide-Eyed + Dreaming (1996) is worth owning. I have only heard a little bit of his latest material.

If you're into instrumental stuff, there's an entire genre of so-called "post-rock" bands you might want to check out, such as

Pelican
Explosions in the Sky
Mogwai
Shalabi Effect
Godspeed You! Black Emperor
A Silver Mt Zion
Isis

I used to spend so much time listening to guitar music when younger but I gues it gets a bit one dimensional after a while. I have completely stopped listening to the shredder guys like satriani, al di meols etc. I actually put on the most recent Eric Johnson Cd and just hated it for being so boring, I then put on Devendra Banhart and was much happier. I will post some of the good instrumental stuff that still floats around though:

Ralph Towner and Gary Peacock - Oracle (!!)
Ry Cooder and Manuel Galban - Mambo sinuendo (killer cuban tele picking)
Mark Ribot and the Prosthetic Cubans - Y los Cubanos postizos
VM Bhatt, Ry Cooder - A meeting by the river
(won GP's album of the year many moons ago)
Rachel's music for Egon Schiele (no guitar but lovely)

+1 for the Gatton

Brent Mason: Hot Wired (if you can find a copy)
Chet Atkins
Django Reinhardt
Birelli Legrange
The Hellecasters
John Jorgenson (Franco American Swing)
George Benson (Early... and late.... some of his stuff has words... I wish he just kept his mouth shut and played guitar... well... unless he's scat soloing)
Wes Montgomery
Grant Green
Buck Owens and the Buckaroos (Instrumental Hits)
Jimmy Bryant (gotta hear this guy)
Bryan Sutton (Bluegrass... AWESOME)
Tony Rice Unit (some albums have words.. bluegrass/newgrass... i.e. acoustic jazz... you won't find better music anywhere... imho...)
Jerry Douglas (dobro... I know... but still... he's got some incredible guitar players playing with him...)

in fact... Any bluegrass album featuring David Grisman, Ricky Skaggs, Tony Rice, Bryan Sutton, Mark O'Connor, Jerry Douglas, Bela Fleck, Sam Bush, Chris Thile, Edgar Meyar, and a host of other famous bluegrass musicians is bound to have some incredible guitar work on it..... Don't be fooled.. it's not backwoods hick music (although I am a backwoods hick... ...) Bluegrass is a form of music (or so I've heard) that was basically developed by professional musicians.... Bill Monroe and his Bluegrass Boys... so... to play it good... you have to have some serious musical chops.....

It's my firm belief that if I had the ability to play bluegrass, women would swoon.... not necessarily over me... but when i'd play, they'd be swooning somewhere...

..... Hank Garland perhaps?.... oooh.... or Lenny Breau..... oooohh.. Charlie Christian....

Do yourself a favor and get a copy of any of "The Filthy Rich" stuff.. they were a small time band from the southeast u.s. that had Guthrie Trapp on guitar.... he was under 20 at the time, and had more musical chops than any other guitar player you've probably ever seen live....

um.... let's see... I'll post more when the wife goes to work... she already accuses me of hanging out here on the forum more than being with her....

it's true.... but you guys will talk tele stuff... she just wants to talk babies, home improvements, and yard work...

Maybe beneath your jazzy sensibilities, telechaser, but Link Wray is one of my favorites. The Ventures are cool, too. Definitely not beard-stroking journeys into sound, but they definitely set a mood.

Thanks for the lists. I'll be checking some of them out.

You forgot Jim Campilongo! And Redd V. has some instrumental only cuts.

How about Bill Frizell, Medeski, Martin, (Scofield) and Wood. Les Paul, Chet Atkins.... JOE Beck, Bela Fleck and the Flecktones

Here's a couple I haven't seen yet.

Focus - "Eruption" with the incredible Jan Akkerman on guitar.

Again Focus playing "Hocus Pocus" watch their keyboardist go nuts...

Mark Knopfler - "Local Hero", although better known for his flued stratocaster runs and his JJ Cale way of singing, Knopfler shows here that he's no one trick pony.

Pat Metheny - "into the dream" playing his crazy 42 string guitar

And again Pat Metheny, covering Norah Jones' song "Don't know why"

gotta add jimmy raney to that list. gotta.

but be careful...i know you're on a jazz quest, but i've found it detrimental to my playing to listen to only guitar. there's so much that can be learned by listening to other instruments...

but, add jimmy raney to that list.

and grant green. the old stuff.

I know Weird One mentioned them, but Hellecasters, Hellecasters, Hellecasters!!! Their first album Return Of The Hellecasters is a bible of harmonious twang/jazz.

And also, anything by Eric Johnson, or Roy Buchanon.

Unbelievable! Man, if you are only 28, and you are learning from guys like Grant Green, I have to assume you are one hell of a guitar player and going down all the right roads. Most guitarists, especially at your age, don't have a clue or even know who Grant Green is. Very smart choice!

Danny Caron is another guy worth checking out.

...and another vote here for the Hellecasters!

Hey FUZZY,

Just can't stand to anybody singing at the moment, that's all. Also any lyric content tends to limit the overall effect of the song. But that's just me. It's not a conscious choice, something that just happened.

Thanks for chiming in. I do respect your opinion.

I'm aware of the potential to learn from other instruments. I've heard guitarists mention that when being interviewed, that they learn lines from other instruments (specially saxophone.)

Nothing to do with the learning side of things but the listening side of things. Listening to other instruments including voice simply gives me a headache for some reason. It is quite frustrating specially from someone who used to sing and play keyboards. But that's what is at the moment.

Another vote for Los Straitjackets. I saw their shows in Seattle and Portland this weekend.
Opening in Seattle was a band called "King of Hawaii". GREAT band! Check out their samples here:

thanks man...sounds like you got some good taste too.

i've posted some playing in twanger central in the past...i'm happy with what i can do, but let's say that even the right road can be a long, windy one:)

now chaser, i can ig what you're saying...it's only been in the last year or two that i've been able to get back into vocals...you might want to try out some of the duo albus ella fitzgerald made with joe pass...

and speaking of joe (who i know you're already hip to) there's some absolutely beautiful solo guitar albums out there (and guitar duets) here i am going against my own advice, but check out this stuff:

george van eps (albums like "mellow guitar" and "soliloquy")

howard alden, and his albums with greats like vaneps and bucky pizzarelli

bucky's duets with his son john (holy crap can these cats play some RHYTHM)

barney kessel made an enjoyable solo album

and if you can hunt it down, find barry galbraith's "guitar and the wind"
barry's such an underappreciated player by just abot everyone except those who played with him...and his books about chord melody playing are great.

How about Roy Buchanan? There is some singing here and there but it hardly counts most of the time in Roy's case, to be honest. Plus, you can just forward to the instrumental tracks.

I have to put in a word for Matt Rae here - very clean and melodic, with serious chops. Kind of contry sometimes, but in a good, Chat Atkins way. Floatin' on Twangy is a favorite.

I cast one vote in favor of there not always having to be a point. To me, this place is escapism at its very best, and sometimes threads are nothing but casual conversations. After all, "discussion" is our middle name!!

thebob, I already mentioned him (see above). So pipe down! Just kidding--Link is one of my favorites, too. You won't find any sweet legato runs over minor 9ths, to be sure, but his playing has some killer presence. Good stuff.
