You're quite right; I don't think anyone in Boston was high on the Drew or Lugo signings...but I don't see either of them going anywhere next year...
Matsuzaka, however, performed admirably considering the cultural shift and change in leagues. 200+ innings pitched, 200+ strikeouts, 15 wins (a few more would have been had if the bats had been awake in some games...his ERA was just over 3 during his "slump"). I'll take it, for a third starter - lets see how he fares next year. We're hoping he settles in, like Mr. Beckett. But I'll agree with your larger point, about folks being bothered by the payroll. But if you want to see some vitriolic hate speech about the Sox ownership, you have to look no further than Sox fans themselves (www.sonsofsamhorn.net). Believe it or not, when it comes to hatin' on the Sox, no region comes even close to us in Massachusetts! It's like complaining about your wife. You can do it all you want, but when your friends do, you tell them to shut the h@!! up. |

The complaining about the wife (girlfriend) analogy was perfect.
The thing is Lugo did steal 33 bases, knocked in 70+ runs, and hit .280 in the second half. Solid at short as well. Drew got off to a hot start, tanked, then got hot in sept. I am willing to cut him some slack because of distraction off of the field (his child is definately more important than baseball and I don't care how much he makes when it comes to that) and for transitioning from the National League to the American League. I was harsh on him all year but I did not know the whole story, I felt like an ass when I found out. Anyway, I have not given up on them. |

One more point. The Sox and yankees with their huge payrolls have a down side as well, they are expected to win the World Series. If the Twins, A's, Indians, or whomever do not win it people will look at the season in terms of the good parts and the bad parts. If the Sox or yanks don't win there are no good and bad parts, the entire season was a failure and that is how it should be. The pressure of winning from the media, the fans, and the organization is why Boston and New York is not always the best place for some players. The grass is not always greener on the otherside. Also the Mets, Cubs, and a few other teams are beginning to creep up when it comes to team payrolls (10 teams over 100 mil. in payroll). As long as the Sox and yankees don't go any higher the whole payroll thing will die down soon enough. I hope.

1 - 1, heading back to Ctown. If you would have told me that CC and Fausto would have given up 12 earned runs and the Tribe would split the series I'd have said you were crazy.
Schilling was what I thought he was (old and in the way, the ketchup on the ankle trick will not work this year) and the Sox bullpen is exposed (outside of Papelon). Trot Nixon comes up big, fun game for me and my sons ( 10 & 13 ) I have come in off of the ledge.

Last nights game was great till it got blown out. I really thought Oritz, Manny or Lowell were going to make the difference at the end, but you have to give it to the Cleveland bullpen and manager. Here's hoping for more close games as this moves forward. Now it's a 5 game series!

Westbrook had the best outing from a starter this whole series, who'd have guessed?
Should be able to get tomorrow's game in (rain isn't supposed to be too strong). Just keeping this thread alive.

3-1
Wakefield looked good the first time through the lineup, then came the 5th inning. Should've yanked Byrd after sitting for a half hour, but I think they wanted to get one more innings from him. Also what was up with Manny celebrating a meaningless home run? How about acting like you've been there before. Hope the rain holds off on Thursday, don't want to see a rain out.

UG!
Well, the Sports Gods giveth (Patriots) and taketh away (Sox). You cannot destroy nor create wins and losses, they all equal out in the end. Manny admiring his shot reminds me of ex-Sox closer (and attempted murderer) Ugeth Urbina in 2001 pumping his fist after recording the third out in the ninth inning - after he blew the lead. |

Well, I guess....
.....the Sox came back from even a worse deficit before, down 0-3 to the Yankees. But naw, I don't think so, not this time...
TV execs must be jumping off tall buildings right now! Colorado and Ohio?? Who'd a thunk it?

3-2, Beckett got it done. Tribe played sloppy defense.
Any of you $ox fans still out there? Or are you still in the garage with the cah running? Does Fausto Carmona show he is the true ace of the Tribe? Does Schilling have any ketchup packs left to put in his socks? Stay tuned and find out Saturday.

Wait! (cough, cough)...the Sox won?...(cough cough)...honey, turn off the car and get in here!! Theyah comin' back to the Pahk!
Hey, they're alive, and they've got more than a fighting chance at home - if Schilling pitches like the Schilling of old. wait, he IS really old...uh-oh! Figured this'd go 7, but what about Dice-K in the last one, if it gets that far? Well, let's just worry about tomorrow night. |

It will be interesting to see what Francona will do to get the bottom of the Sox order kick started. It is all Youkilis, Ortiz, and Ramirez right now, Pedroia got some balls past the Indians defense last night, but Lowell is getting nothing to hit because the guys behind him are not getting the job done. I think that Jacoby Ellsbury and Alex Cora may get to start game six.

I think your going to see an explosion of Sox bats in the next 2 games. Schilling pitches great every other game, so he's due. There is one thing for sure with both the Sox and Indians, there will be a quick hook on pitchers in the coming games. As far as Dice-k, he pitched a gem against the Tribe this year and he is capable of coming up with the big performance. Sock em Sox!!! I'm sure people in Cleveland are a tad nervous now, all the pressure is on them. Your up 3 games to 1 your expected to win! I believe it will be the guys that haven't hit yet that will come up big for the Sox, they are due!!!!

If it gets to game seven it will be gut check time for Daisuke because he is obviously tired from his first season in MLB, he has never pitched this many innings or travelled as much as he has this season. I think that having something to prove may help him, he has a lot of pride and it is one that he will not want to lose. Then again his tank could be empty as well. I will be working and will not be able to watch game six or seven (if needed.) Rank & file do not have internet access.

I hear ya about not watching the games...I have to be up at 1:50am Sunday, so Game 6 is out of the picture (although i might have a chance to actually GO, as my father in law has season tickets, which means "no sleep for me!").
So I hope it goes to Game 7 so I can actually WATCH that darn thing! |

Can't wait for the game- I'm holding with my prediction of the tribe, and am about to hurl an uncalled for knuckleball at Boston:
Manny, cut that dang tie-on hair! Once it started in the NFL it became so cliche that it's a joke. Keep the sport of baseball clean cut ok? Every time you run, your hat flies off- or you knock it off on purpose- and your mop flies out with that silly Boston-approved dew rag. And while I'm raggin on ya Manny, can you get a uniform that fits? That outfit you wear looks like a loose pair of pajamas- hell you should be wearin slippers instead of cleats. OK, I feel better now. PS- I'm sure Manny is a gentleman, I just have to find something wrong with Boston other than David Ortiz's unnatural growth spurt these past few years. Go Tribe!!

I don't have a garage, so sitting in the car would just waste gas... :-)
Carmona hasn't shown me much so far - not really worried about him as long as ANYONE not named Ortiz or Ramirez shows up at the park Saturday. To be fair, though, neither has Schilling. :-) David Ortiz's unnatural growth spurt?!? You're kidding, right? Anyway, let's make this a series already! The tribe's done their part Sox, you do yours! Go Sox!

Game 7
Nothing better in all of sports than a "Game 7" and a hats off to both The Sox and The Tribe. Normally I'd pick The Sox to win it at home tonight in Game 7, but with The Sox rolling the dice and going with Dice-K, I'm not so sure. This guys been terrible in the playoffs so far and seems more nervous on the mound than Paris Hilton at a spelling bee. Time for Dice-k to start earning all those yen. The Tribe has the ability to light him up at any given time and if I were Francona, I'd be afraid, very afraid, that Dice-K will crumble faster than a stale fortune cookie. Hate to say it Red Sox Nation, but my money's on The Tribe tonight.

Hey Genny,
Where were you when the Yankees faded into the sunset? You're not a Yankees fan, you're just a Red Sox hater. You never did answer as to how someone from California becomes a Yankees fan. You're probably a Cowboys fan too! Are you sure you're not really from Connecticut? You act like the losers from CT that chose to support the team from the south because it's the easy way out. You probably used to support the Dodgers until they were bought by a Bostonian and are managed by an ex Red Sox manager. Get real! |

Don't know about anyone else here, but by the time the games have been ending here in the eastern time zone, it is long past "my" bedtime. What ever happened to the 2 hr. ball game ?
I reckon that's why us older "east coasters" don't usually answer until the next day (after a nice, happy, contented, secure nights sleep). - Jay

Wow, CC and Carmona have both really choked big-time. I didn't see it coming, because they did so well against the Yankees. I still think we have a good chance tonight. I like Westbrook and Byrd vs. Dice-K. I think they will throw strikes. Hafner needs to suck it up and hit the damn ball. Now is not the time to go into a slump!

Beach, you know dice-k shut down the tribe earlier this year. He won 15 games and should have won 3 or 4 more but got no run support. The guy has pitched some gems this year. Why you so concerned, if there is even an inkling he doesn't have it they will have someone in their faster than you can say,

I think that Daisuke has the advantage tonight, he's playing at home and the momentum has shifted to Boston. He doesn't have to be great he only needs to be solid, maybe six innings four runs or less. He maybe tired but he also has something to prove. Then turn it over to Delcarmen/Timlin, Okajima, and Papelbon. I knew that this was going to be a tough series, unfortunately only one game has been a close one, Westbrook and Matsuzaka (4-2.) It should be a good one.

nah............
shake, if you look back at some of my earlier posts, I picked the Sox to win it before the series started with the Tribe, but as I said, if the The Tribes pitchers got to the Sox, it could be a great series - Dice-K had a good season but fell apart in September - his ERA is 7.62 in September and in his last start he went only 5 innings, threw 101 pitches and gave up 4 runs. Not the kind of stats to hang your season on and I think Dice-K has another early exit tonight. My liking or disliking The Sox has nothing to do with my opinion - remember the name of the thread is talk with your head, not your heart. If The Sox had Schilling starting tonight, I'd have a different opinion. Tonight will be a defining moment in Dice-K's career - if he comes through for The Sox, then those who signed him to his huge contract look like geniuses - if he falters early, the questions will continue throughout next year about the guys durability and the wisdom of The Sox to throw all that money his way if he can't make it through a full MLB season.

Bottom of the 8th, and I'm heading out to the garage, where my car is already idling.
Congratulations $ox, the yankees of the 21st Century.

...oooooo,it's getting closer...
...to a RSox Nation boil over...I'm not a fan of either the Indian's or the RSox team, but I thought a Cleveland/Rockies series would have been cool...the Indian's will have to come up big in the top 'o the 9th to pull it out...the RSox are going in for the kill though, they smell blood...the drama continues...
