Duke Robillard and Kid Bangham

This is an interesting tone comparison folks!

It's the Fabulous Thunderbirds post-Jimmie Vaughan with Duke Robillard, and Kid Bangham. Listen to Duke and Kid trading fours later on in the song. Compare tones. Whose do YOU prefer??? What do you think they're playing through? If there's any Duke aficionados out there, then you probably already know what I'm getting at.

I saw them on that tour in New Britain, CT. That's from what - 1988? I seem to remember them both playing through Twin Reverbs. I was always a Duke fan, but wanted to see them with JV. Killer show though, and the first time I'd seen Kid Bangham.

Now that's what I'm talkin' about. Great playing,trading licks,a tight band,strong vocals...umm umm ummm. Long time Duke fan here as well. The Kid was pretty impressive too. Thanks for the link!

I don't know about Kid, but Duke is definately NOT using a Twin.

Well both were good but they ruined the song as neither connected
or contributed well throughout with the tune and were over doing with
so so riffing at end.

And as much as I like the "stage look", it doesn't help here.

Cool. I saw that line up in 91. I remember the backline of TR's for some reason. Pure, great rockin' blues. I love it. I really enjoy the Kid stepping up at the end for the solo trading.

Well, no one has got it yet....

Isn't this that period when Duke was playing through an old SS Peavey PA head? You can see it sitting on top of another amp. I just thought that he had a cool tone here (neverminding the Strat-quack tones) while the Kid's tone is kinda thin and raspy.

I remember at the time, Duke was raving in all the magazines about that setup. Everyone thought he was nuts. He did sound good though. Whatever works!

Kid was awesome with my 2nd favorite barband of all time ( the JV Tbird's #1) Sugar Ray & the Bluetones. Some awesome shows!!!

Duke certainly has the tone in my opinion. Kid's a great player and I have seen him before but in this instance his tone was thin and missing something.

Before you blame it on him remember there are variables out of his control here as well. Sound man and Mic do have a major role.

Both are great players but just watch Duke take his experience and use it accordingly. When the kid comes in with a threat he bites back with a JV vengeance. It was somewhat like seeing Jimi and Stevie (which I have) on stage trading licks in "Couldn't Stand the Weather." Maybe not as powerful but the implication of rivalry is there.

I love doing that in a jam atmosphere. I hate participating in jam sessions at the local blues society but when I am coerced into participating I let all the kids have their say. Holding back and only throwing a lick in here and there. It's like a marathon they will exhaust all of their prowess and licks by the time I step up. I don't think of it as showing off or trying to out do a guy it's about relating experience to them and controlled soloing. Treat the audience like a woman and she will love you for it.

It's what I always admired about hanging out at Antone's watching the usual cast of characters trade licks. There is this vibe there that makes you hold back until someone starts pushing you in the corner. When that time comes it's do or die. Duke had the tone and the licks and when push come to shove be careful brother.

2/3 of that band is from Providence as well. Not Texas.

Good post Trag - I've heard of Duke's Peavey setup, but the first time I actually got to check it out... (actualy his opening lines in his first solo are reminicent of Robert Cray). And I thought that was some tasty trading, both giving it stick without overdoing it...

Anyone notice Duke's strat go out of tune for a few seconds. He fixed it quick but it was right after he dumped it on the solo.

I saw Duke once when he used the Peavey P.A. head & stompboxes. It wasn't bad ('cuz he's always great!), but I'd seen him with just a Super Reverb and thought his tone was much better. In fact, that was a turning point for me, as I was into channel-switching amps & stompboxes at that time!

As for that New Britain T-Birds show, I don't remember seeing the P.A head, but remember both of them playing thru TR's then. I liked Kid's tone both back then, and in the video. I'm thinking that's just the tone he was going for.

Last time I saw Duke he was using a TRRI. Time before that it was a SS PA head into a 2x12 cab with a bunch of pedals.

I saw a Twin behind him in that vid.

You'll also notice that Duke's and Kid's pup switches were in different positions.

First of all, thanks for the clip--great song, great band, great performance.

Now as far as the tone--you know those guitar things have knobs and switches on them, right?

Duke's first solo was on the back/middle position for sparkle and pop. Sounds cool. The trade with Kid section had Duke on the neck pup and Kid on the back pickup. This gives the two performers distinctly different sounds and adds contrast interest (see Hotel California Tele/LP last solo). It was a deliberate and thoughtful thing to do.

Both Kid Bangham and Duke are what you call "tone" players, and get the most out of whatever they're playing.

BTW--Kid Bangham is also a very good drummer.

The tone on both was great!! Why would you want two players in the same band with the same tone. Both had good Blues Tones!! Wonder what the Kid is doing these days??

I,too,really love this band,and this clip.
Kid is working on a compilation of stuff he has played on,both studio and live,for a "near-future" release.
He runs a music school now.
