Guitar/band related movies
I've seen a few movies that are guitar/band related like:
Crossroads - I love this movie. I watch it every now and then and always smile when the Tele wins in the end. Still Crazy - gives me the laughs everytime I watch it. Almost Famous Rock Star That's all I can remember at the moment. If you can recommend other movies that are sort of in the same category. I would love to watch more and don't want to miss out. Please! NO Britney Spears, Beyonce, or Eminem!

Here are a few:
One that came out very recently is called Once - stars the same Irishman who played the Tele guy (touch topic) in The Commitments. Totally great on every level.
El Mariachi is muy cool. I still haven't seen the Antonio Banderas remake, but the original Mexican version was tons of fun. Latcho Drom is about gypsy music, and it has bucketloads of hot guitar going. Starts out with very traditonal stuff, moving slowly and sublimely into gypsy jazz and urban gypsy music. Back to the Future has one of my favorite guitar subplots - so that's where Chuck Berry picked up those cool riffs! Summer of Sam is a Spike Lee flick - Adrian Brody plays a punk player obsessed with the Who and Strats. The movie must hold the world land speed record for most f-words per second per second. This really doesn't count, I know, but I've gotta also mention the remake of The Invasion of the Body Snatchers, in which Jerry Garcia plays a banjo-plucking busker. There are also a zillion movies that have guitar soundtracks to kill for. My faves: - Paris Texas - Thunder Road - The Border - The Wild Parrots of Telegraph Hill Clapton, Cooder, and Knopfler have all done a lot of soundtracks - I'd just Google them to track them down. Skip Purple Rain at all costs. |

And...
...now that you have me thinking:
- School of Rock - Coalminer's Daughter - Jailhouse Rock - Cool Hand Luke (just a taste, but it's young Harry Dean Stanton...) ...and that Johnny Cash movie with Joachim Phoenix and Reese Witherspoon. |

Buddy Holly story with Gary Busey should be considered a classic- then there is La Bamba ( was that Lou Diamond Phillips in that?).
Now someone else's turn to help me (i know... IMDB) what was the movie with Willie Nelson and Kris Kristofferson- I remember having the soundtrack and loving it. It was not Honeysuckle Rose. |

A Mighty Wind
It's sort of the folk version of Spinal Tap.

I think the Blues Brothers and Crossroads are the best i've seen. Timeless classics.

You may not like the story as much as I do but Bob Dylan and His Band have some great moments in "Masked & Anonymous."
Even though it is a documentary check out "Searching For The Wrong-Eyed Jesus." It features performances by David Johansen, Johnny Dowd, The Handsome Family, & David Eugene Edwards from 16 Horsepower. Dexter Gordon received an Oscar nomination for his performance in "'Round Midnight." A film loosely based on the lives of Bud Powell and Lester Young. Robert Altman's "Nashville" was quite good as well. Tom Hanks' movie "That Thing You Do!" was fun to watch. |

"Sweet and Lowdown" is great.
"Brother where art Thou" another classic.. my Favorite "Musician Movie", though is: "Great Balls of Fire". But, I'm a Jerry Lee fan from before the movie, so my opinion on that one doesn't count. |

Though it's a bit incidental to the plot, there's some pretty good stuff from Jeff Healey and band (essentially starring as themselves) in the Kurt Russell (or was it Patrick Swayze?) movie "Roadhouse" that's been repeated a few times on UK TV.

Fastest Guitar in the West ( Old Roy Orbison movie)
Pure Country Your Cheatin' Heart ( Hank Williams Story - Jr did the soundtrack) Living Proof ( Hank Jr. Story ) But only a musician / songwriter could find "Ishtar" hilarious... if you're ever feelin' down about your writting or your abilities, just check out Dustin Hoffman and Warren Beaty as the next wanna-be Simon & Garfunkle.... On a lighter note - and this one probably only appeals to those of us old enough to have lived it (or come close): That Thing You Do!
The wife and I watch this a couple of times a year and we both love it, even though we get COMPLETELY different things from it.

"Blind Date" with Bruce Willis hocking (and regaining) a mid-70's Stratocaster and an AMAZING performance by Stanley Jordan!

+1 on The Commitments. That was a great movie! The bar gig when they do "Try a Little Tenderness" is classic. That film, more than anything else, became my inspiration to start the band I'm in now.
Some of the cast (not the singer, alas!) formed the band for real after the movie came out. Last I hear they're still gigging in the UK and on the continent.

Rock School - about the Paul Green School of Rock, not the Jack Black one.
What's love got to do with it? - The Tina Turner Story Ray Back Beat - about the Beatles in Germany Standing in the shadows of Motown - documentary/reunion of the legendary Funk Brothers band that backed almost every 60's Motown hit. A MUST SEE!!
