James Burton DVD
Has anyone watched this? It says that he gives instruction on his techniques such as "chicken picking" etc.

Looks like a DVD version of the Hotlicks VHS tape I have.
Don't buy it!! It'll just make you feel inadequate and get you all depressed. Same goes for the Danny Gatton tape. <g> Good stuff. Some clips from this DVD and others are on Youtube: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Wm4ppyF1D_A Search for James Burton, Danny Gatton, Arlen Roth and you'll find clips from various Hotlicks tapes/DVD. |

i have it and have learned a lot from it. its not nearly as difficult as trying to keep up with the gatton and some of the other hot lick dvds.
actually i think its a good place to start learning the hot tele country pickin. after all james helped write the original book on this stuff. also, id like to point out that part of the beauty of this dvd is the fact that james is such a natural player you get a fantastic opportunity to watch his fingers literally "float" over the fretboard! seriously, most of the licks are not real difficult and if you use the special features section, you can slow them down (in pitch) and get a pretty good view of james' fingerings. ive picked up some really nice bends and runs from it that ive used in my performances... well worth the price. imho. rand z tropicalsoul.net |

Yeah, the back of the DVD says that there's some new extra stuff in it. Some guy was asking about "chicken picking" instruction so I thought I'd mention it.
I just bought it this weekend and haven't had a chance to watch it yet.

amazon has good deals if you check out their used for $**.** section. many of the "used" dvds are actually new and you can get them for $16.00 instead of $24.00 or whatever. there's a minimal amount of shipping @ 2 or 3 $.
i have about 10 of em and all are interesting... some are pretty "out there" like andy summers; neat stuff but you'd better be able to strectch about 7 frets to play some of those bizarre chords he throws at you. ronnie earl has a HL dvd thats very worthwhile and usable, and so does duke robillard. gatton's "strictly rhythm" has some neat and usable stuff, but it is gatton so its not real easy. if you want to know the basics of slide out of E or G tuning, lee roy parnell has a nice dvd on HL and gives you some usable ideas on getting around in those tunings. brent mason's dvd is real good but at a pretty high level of playing, so if you're beginner to intermediate it would be very hard to catch a lot of what hes doing. arlen roth is an excellent teacher and his dvd's (all of em) are pretty good... he really knows his theory too. but, really all of the instructional dvds and videos whether HL or otherwise, offer opportunities to improve your knowledge of the guitar so they're all worth checking out, imho. good luck and keep pushing the envelope!!! imho as always. rand z tropicalsoul.net |

Yeah, I bought the video years ago, and recently got the dvd.
If I remember rightly, it's only around 40 mins or so, but he packs a lot in - both playing (chicken pickin', double-picking, string bending, etc) and talking about his equipment (signature & Paisley Teles). But I bought it because I'm a JB fan and he's one of my influences. Thanks,

Watched it last night. He does the solos from when he was playing with Ricky and I think you can watch them in slow motion.
He does go through chicken pickin' but you'll have to really sit down and study the footage to get it down- along with all the other stuff. He brings out the Paisley Tele that he says Fender gave him when he was playing with Elvis.

James Burton
I got the James Burton Hotlicks on VHS. Its fun to watch. I didn't really learn anything from it.
i was kinda hopin' he would teach you WHY he plays what he does. But he just shows you how to play some Songs. Its really good if you want to play those songs just like him. I got the Brian Setzer Hotlicks. My favourite so far. David Grissom's is Awesome. Also got the Warren Haynes/Joe Pass/ Steve Morse/Paul Gilbert.
