1 in 3 D-E-S-T-R-O-Y-E-D ~this will make you angry...

OK, it has no Tele content (like most of my posts) but from a historical point of view shouldn't this be protected??? I mean just because someone shells out the doe means that they can destroy it??!!!

"A Babe Ruth game-worn New York Yankees home jersey from 1925 was cut up on Monday by a card company that will insert swatches of the jersey into packs.

The company, Donruss, purchased the jersey -- believed to be 1 of 3 known Ruth pinstripe jerseys in existence -- at an auction last summer for $264,210.

One ceremonial 1-by-1 inch cut of the jersey was made by Donruss president and COO Bill Dully, with Ruth's daughter, Julia Ruth Stevens, assisting at the ESPN Zone in New York City. The jersey will immediately go back to the company's headquarters in Arlington, Texas, to be sliced and diced into 2,100 pieces."

This make me furious ~1 of 3 known cut up for a sales gag...couldn't they use a repro?

~ every baseball fan should boycot that company forever for this.

That would be like parting out Harrisons Rosewood Tele.
or Claptons Blackie.

I can't think of any other example guitar wise that is 1 in 3 known to exist.

as bad as...

Michael Jackson buying the rights to those classic Beatles tunes and then turning around and using them for commercials for Nike and H&R Block, amongst others...

when it comes to PR, making a buck, or just doing it 'cuz they got the money to burn, nothing seems to stop this type of person, or company...

some folks just got no pride...

i used to get mad, now i just sigh. it's so rampant. i won't even go into other examples...

the shirt off his back...

kinda like babe's shirt, i'm torn.

on the one hand, it's just a bunch of old threads. i mean, we all know that, right? like your old car dies, and you might get sentimental, but you know that even though you named it peggy sue and talked to it all the time, it was really just a pile of steel and rubber and glass and weird stuff in the ashtray?

on the other hand...

ever see that deniro flick raging bull? the biopic about jake lamotta, a boxer who took a dive? there's this great scene where he needs money bad, so he smashes up his heavyweight campionship prize, a jewel-encrusted girdle or something, so he can sell the gems.

and of course it turns out the stones aren't worth much - if he'd left the thing alone, he'd've gotten a lot more cash.

because why? because he didn't know that things have value for what they are that goes beyond what they were before they became what they are!

so next time some asks you why you're talking to peggy sue, tell 'em about the people who chopped up the babe's sweatshirt.

they'll understand.

Arise comrades!

Sorry, my classes have all been talking about Marx lately. Don't worry though, if Marx is right, that jersey is just another stepping stone toward the revolution, after which the remaining two jerseys will belong to everybody!

Ashes to ashes, dust to dust....

These material things are just an illusion, and they will all pass away, just as Marx did....as a matter of fact all of the Marx Bros are gone now....sad but true.

Since this is the Baddog cafe and someone brought up Marx, don't you think that Marx...Karl, that is...was born maybe a 100 years too early. Think of the impact a strong socialist movement could have today in this age of instant worldwide communication. I am not espousing the movement...just observing... I personally believe that any economic system is destined to go awry since we humans are the ones guiding the actions of the systems under which we struggle.
Also, the Marx Bros comedy team passed from us way too early. I could do with a few more laughs each day.
