The "iPod on Random" Thread

I’m sure this has been done, but I haven’t seen it. Here are the first 15 songs that came up on shuffle on my iPod:

1. Can’t Be Still- Booker T and the MG’s- perhaps the iPod knows I watched that Stax thing on PBS last night. Probably the tightest band ever. Rock Solid.
2. Little Boy Blue- Robert Lockwood, Jr. and Otis Spahn- just a guitar and a piano playing the blues. Nice.
3. She Was Hot- Stones ripping off Chuck berry for the umpteenth time, but with lyrics that would not have made it on the radio in 1956. One of the few post-“Tattoo You” Stones tunes that can hang with their glory days stuff. “Undercover” is a good album.
4. Little Queenie- Chuck Berry. He pretty much invented rock n’ roll guitar (as distinct from Rockabilly). And he’s probably my favorite lyricist
5. Done Somebody Wrong- Elmore James. Essential slide work.
6. Natural Mystic- Bob Marley- I likes the reggae, I does.
7. Haffner Serenade, Allegro Assai- W.A. Mozart.- My favorite classical composer. Just gorgeous melodies.
8. Blue Christmas- Elvis Aaron Presley- A classic cheesy Elvis tune. Elvis, Mozart, Chuck Berry, the Stones- what else do you need?
9. Hot Love-Cheap Trick. Love the Trick. Seen em’ 5 times. From “Cheap Trick”, their first record.
10. Annie Get your Gun- Squeeze- not real axe-heavy, but Squeeze wrote some of the best pop tunes ever. Real music by real musicians.
11. West Savannah- Outkast- I used to be really into rap, now I dabble. It’s not the same since they can’t use as many samples. That said, Outkast is worth checking out for sure.
12. And Your Bird Can sing- Beatles-A perfect tune from their best record.
13. Move on Down the Line- ZZ Top- A little more rockish (as opposed to bluesy) than some of their other early stuff. Great solo, with the Rev Billy G copping some countryish bendy licks. From Tres Hombres.
14. Tip of My Tongue- John Hiatt- from Bring the Family- pretty sure that’s Ry Cooder playing on this ballad. John hiatt is a great songwriter, and makes a lot out of a pretty limited voice. If you don’t know him, buy this record and Slow Turning.
15. Do that Stuff- Parliament- Make my funk the P funk, I want my funk uncut! The second greatest funk band ever (James Brown’s band is first of course). This song is irresistible, and more on the party side of the Parliament /Funkadelic stuff, as opposed to some of the really weird stuff (which is good too). I love the “I wanna go back and get more of that funky stuff” part – killer horns.

I can live with that, nothing really embarrassing. But no country seems unusual.

Your turn. No cheating…

I don't have a playlist to share, but I will say that every once in a while I forget that I'm listening to itunes on shuffle and not the radio and wonder what what great radio station I'm listening to.

I guess I just have good taste in music :)

You know, I'm convinced that "Random" is not random on an iPod. For instance, on some days my iPod is a huge Elvis Costello fan.

Mine too. Sometimes I get a clump of Elvis, or Beatles, or Bach, or a string of Motown all day. I hate when it grabs chapter 4 of an audio book.

If you uncheck the audio books they don't get played in iTunes. I'm not sure if it transfers that setting to the iPod or not.

Random?

Apple swears the shuffle function is random, but sometimes I get things so bizarre that it makes me wonder, like the same song three times in a row covered by different artists.

I'm not near my ipod right now to do a list, but I listen to it on random most of the time. I have a jack in my car to plug it into, but it's not a controller, it just plays the ipod through the stereo. So for safety's sake I just put it on shuffle and let it rip. I listen to it that way frequently, like almost every time I drive somewhere, and for long periods, because I drive a lot.

I'm sure that it gets into an area where it will play the same artist several times near each other, not one song after another, but maybe three songs in six or seven. That happens way to often to be random. It does seem to have days when it's playing one song after another that fit my mood perfectly.

On the other hand, it does some funny things sometimes that have to be random that it couldn't have any reference to. Just for the most recent example, not the most remarkable, yesterday it played Dust my Broom by Elmore James. Then right after it played another song by another artist that started off with the Dust my Broom guitar riff, but wasn't called Dust My Broom. Little things like that happen all the time, so often that I don't remember the better examples.

not familiar w/ the Sonny L. version, a few folks have covered this song.

This Mojo Boogie is from J.B.'s "Vietnam Blues", which is IMHO, one of the best blues albums period, though it doesn't get a lot of mention. Buy it today, really,... every song on the album/CD is just as good.

Oh, I remember now.. it's Allen Toussaint- he and Sonny play that tune on Sonny's "South of I-10" album. Just piano and a resonator. Good stuff.

This is a little better than what I usually get. My iPod usually plays songs that I'm not really in the mood for at the time, with a few good ones thrown in. I would listen to all of these songs without skipping any.

1. RHCP - We Believe
2. Brad Paisley and Chely Wright - Hard To Be a Husband, Hard To Be a Wife
3. Eagles - There's Gonna Be a Heartache Tonight
4. James Taylor - Everyday
5. George Strait - I Can Still Make Cheyenne

7. Brandon Rhyder - Man of Conviction
8. Chris LeDoux - Amarillo By Morning
9. Foo Fighters - The One To Find
10.Shinedown - 45 (acoustic)
