Papelbon goes mental!!

This is a public service message from today's Boston Globe:

"September 15, 2007
Papelbon calls last night a "mental issue"
By Amalie Benjamin, Globe Staff
Though Jonathan Papelbon didn't stick around to explain his performance last night after the game, he was more than willing to talk about it this afternoon. Sitting at his locker during manager Terry Francona's pregame talk with the media, Papelbon admitted that his troubles last night had more to do with his head than his pitching.

"I think it was more of a mental issue," he said. "My head wasn't in the game really as well as it has been. You know, it's just one of them things, where you get into the situation you've got to be fully involved. Mentally I wasn't completely there. I wasn't 100 percent dead on like I usually am."

Before last night's meltdown against the Yankees -- completed by Hideki Okajima and Papelbon -- the Boston closer had a 16 2/3 innings scoreless streak. It was his first blown save in 13 chances. Lefthanded batters had been hitless in 34 at bats before Bobby Abreu doubled in the ninth inning yesterday.

Papelbon said he only realized the mental issue after the debacle last night, when he looked back at his performance. He said that happens maybe once or twice a year, if that."

I think Jonathan needs some interviewing tips from Bill Belichick.

The a - a -a-a-a Red Sox Win!!!!!!!!!!!!!! A Soothsayer above, A.K.A Mr Emotion, said the Yanks would win the division. Wrong, it's all over!! He also said Yank pitchers could get to Sox pitchers easier. Let's see, last night we knocked out Petite, today we knocked out Wang. Tomorrow we'll. knock out fatso. Outside of a 1 inning unusual bullpen meltdown, we have dominated the Yanks.

The big question for tomorrow nights rubber game is, how is Schilling going to perform? Which of his last two outings are we going to see? Clemens hasn't pitched since the Detroit series, a cortizone shot in his tendon damaged 45 year old elbow does not bode well for a long nights work. Remember Kevin Brown's outing at Fenway in 2004 when the yankees made him pitch after he broke his hand punching that brick wall? Granted anything can happen when Boston & New York take the field, but I think that it all will come down to how well Curt Schilling pitches.

I have to respect Jonathan Papelbon stepping up and taking responsibility, no excuses. Mariano Rivera is the same way and that is what makes the great closer he has been for the last ten years. Papelbon will be ready tomorrow!

Mariano Rivera and Jason Giambi are stand up guys!! This game today shows the character of the Sox, coming back strong from the disaster of the night before!!!

ouch !!!!!!!

I'll be the first to take my lumps ! We certainly got spanked today ! No excuses ! Hats off to the Sox for coming back from Friday's big upset. Unfortunately, I think tomorrow night will get messy as we have The King of Retaliation pitching. I'm certainly not condoning or advocating what Roger is probably going to do, but the brush backs will be inevitable. And as we all know, Schilling is not going to watch and do nothing. Hopefully the umps will nip it in the bud early so we can all enjoy a decent ball game. Again, my hats off to the Sox, and hopefully tomorrow night the Yanks can get back to 4 1/2 behind.

Good one shake!

Hey, nobody hopes I'm wrong more than me.

Yeah, it'll be hard for the Stanks to win the division since they can't sweep Boston now, but they WILL win the wildcard, absolutely no doubt in my mind whatsoever.

That's what scares me; it really doesn't matter if it's a division title or wild care--all you gotta do is get in. With a team like NYY has, that's bad news for everyone else.

Again, hope the last laugh is on me--I hate NY!

That's ok Eric! I say some pretty bad things about the Sox too when they blow a game like the other night. I'm more concerned with the home field advantage throughout the playoffs now. We got 3 games on Cleveland. The tribe are really coming on. I see no clear cut favorite in the playoffs. Anyone of those teams could take it all. It's just if you can get hot at the right time. The Yanks better watch out for the Tigers.

Everybody better watch out for Detroit. They've had some tough luck but I think they're almost as good on paper as Boston and New York and they're a younger Team with very good Starting Pitching especially in a short series.
They also have the best Manager in Baseball.
Jim Leyland would never have left Okajima to burn the way Terry Francona
did. Then again I've never been a Terry Francona fan, in '04 they were a .500 Team until Orlando Cabrerra came over to play Shortstop and they came alive.
It's like they were dead up until that point with Grady Little gone.
The Cabrerra deal is what "lit the fuse" no doubt.
Every now and then The Red Sox do something right in The Front Office and then immediately BLOW IT;
Kason Gabbard has added SIX MORE WINS to his record since being exiled by Theo Epstein; Eric Gagne has gotten a haircut and looks like he's dropped 10 pounds. Since pulling Julian Tavares from The Rotation it's been a real crap shoot; Tavares should be the one facing Clemens NOT Bigmouth.
Actually it shoulda been Gabbard.
Clay Bucholtz throws a No-Hitter and is sent to The Bullpen.
Shrewd

I still find the Kason Gabbard for Eric Gagne trade to be exceedingly disturbing but what done is done, still it leaves the taste of the Sparky Lyle trade in the 70's.

Detroit's season all comes down to how well they play against Cleveland this week. They need to take atleast two of three, if not a sweep.

Reguardless of the outcome of tonights game I really have to tip my hat to the way the yankees have played these last three months. I knew that they would turn things around but I thought that the playoffs were out of reach for them. On paper they have an easy schedule Orioles, Devil Rays, & Blue Jays down the stretch. I will be completely shocked if they don't make the post season.

Okijima has done a terrific job all year long I think with a lead like that I would have let him work his way out of it. The fact that Papelbon came in and got lit up was the most surprising to me. Francona has me scratching my head sometimes but for the most part I find him to be a fine manager, I would take him over Joe Torre anyday. I feel about Torre the way Stan feels about Francona. Most of the time the YES network is the only station with baseball on so I am stuck watching the yankees.I think that Stan and I are going to have to agree to disagree on this one.

My hell is going to be being chained to a chair in front of a t.v. with yankee classics on 24/7 play by play by Michael Kay and color by Sue Waldman. Da horra. Give me Jon Sterling and Al Lieter and I can live with it, but Michael Kay is a weasle.

Baseball at it's finest -

One run lead - bottom of the 9th, 2 outs, bases loaded, Yanks up by 1, and Papi at the plate - wow ! Doesn't get a whole lot better than tonights game for any fan - especially Yankee fans Great series - 2 out of 3 ain't bad, but might not be enough to get it done - Yanks still 4 1/2 back and hanging on to the lead over the resurrected Tigers - still a lot of baseball left in the next 2 weeks -

What a great game! Now that is Red Sox-Yankee baseball, no controversy, just the two best teams in baseball going at it. Once Clemens got past the first inning he was outstanding, Doug M.'s fantastic play at first with two on and two out really saved the game after Damon's error. Derek Jeter's ability in the pressure situations will never be questioned. And to think that the Sox had to take Mike Lowell inorder to get Josh Beckett. Lowell needs to be resigned immediately! Not now, but right now! Schilling was great for 7+ innings. Julio Lugo keeps on getting rbi's when Boston needs them. That ninth inning is why I love baseball. It was not the result I wanted but it made for a nail biting ending

Mariano Rivera, I hope that Okijima and Papelbon were taking notes on how to get the job done when you don't have your best stuff. Jeter and Rivera kill me, but I have nothing but the highest reguard for those two guys. Don't get me wrong I hate the yankees, I'll take tonights 4-3 game over yesterdays 10-1 game every time. Great baseball is what I am after.

The Sox are still going to take the division and that is why I am not sweating the loss.

Let's see here now......

....the Sox have won 3 of their last 12 meetings with NYY.

Think they're hoping they get out of having to play the Yanks in the playoffs?

The playoffs are a new season!! What happened in the regular season is history ( 8 wins, 10 losses). Remember what we did too them in 2004 when we were down 3 to 0? I have never questioned Francona, but Schilling should have come out after 7 innings. The Angels will take care of the Yanks. I feel bad for Detroit fans, looking to us for a win after their team won.

Yeah there is one thing for sure about the Yanks and Sox, they usually give you a great show with playoff atmosphere, even in Spring training games. I love the Sox, but I'll tip my hat to the other team if they ( Sox) lose. It should be a great post season for Baseball fans everywhere!!

Schilling wasn't even up to 80 pitches after the 7th and was just mowing down the yankees. And as far as the eight goes it's Curt Schilling pitching at his best you have to give him a chance to work his way out of it. As a manager you can't panic and pull your pitcher every time a couple of guys get on base.

Ok, I didn't realize his pitch count. I was also watching the Patriots. The few times when picture in picture would have been nice.

As a card carrying member of the Red Sox Nation it is my solemn duty to trash all things N.Y. yankees (with the exception of Jeter and Rivera.) I love the Sox (with the exception of J.D.Drew 'cause he ain't earnin' his keep), I like Francona, and I get along quite well with myself, so I really don't see where the problem is.

How does a 21 yo from LA become a Yankees Fan? Living in Red Sox nation and having gone through some painful and disappointing seasons, all before you were born gives, us the right to second guess OUR team. It's our sadistic way of enjoying the baseball season and wishing we were managing the team. It gives us something to lament in the long winter months since our hockey team has become irrelevant and our basketball team running a close second for almost as many years. As far as our hanging here, it seemed to be an open invitation when the thread 1st started. And we are not here to IMPRESS you either!

Yanks are winning again, Sox are losing. This could turn out to be interesting!!!! Detroit was in 1st place all last year, and lost the division to the Twins on the last day. P.S who's the 51 guys the little kid refers too?

This is getting very interesting, but not in a good way.

The Big Hurt? You've got that right, Frank Thomas just hit his third homerun of the game for Toronto.

Yep, that's all I got Genny.
You haven't been chasing cars again right?
Oh - one other thing.
Watch out for Detroit.

actually two other things...Bigmouth is in his 40's; regardless of "the pitch count" he's a "40 something" and he threw his 75 pitches in temperatures
that were also 40 something; when Giambi came out FranCOMA should have made the call for DelCarmen - this is what's called "strategy".
He could've called Timlin too but Timlin pitched to one batter the previous day and maybe he couldn't go but DelCarmen throws in the high 90's and is young enough where it would have been a no-brainer.
Somebody's got to explain to Tito that "when You don't "play" and "You don't "pay" that means You're "The Guy who makes DECISIONS."

"Duck Soup"

My favorite Red Sox decision (so far)....
"Hey Clay Bucholtz, You just threw a No-Hitter so we're sending You to The Bullpen."
BRILLIANT!!!!!

Hey - put a happy face.

Stan you really seem to really dislike Francona while I don't agree with that, I do however agree with the way the Red Sox organization handles its young pitchers. Kason Gabbard you are 4-0 with a 3.73 era while filling in for an injured Curt Schilling, we are going to trade you to Texas for Eric Gagne. Clay Bucholtz you are 3-0 with a 1.50 with era, we are going to put you in the bullpen and you are only going to pitch one inning in 2 1/2 weeks after pitching a no-hitter inspite of the fact that Daisuke Matsuzaka clearly needs a rest and Tim Wakefield needs to rest his bad back. It doesn't add up to me either.

Three and one half

wow - 3 1/2 now behind the Sox - 3 1/2 ahead of the Tigers in the wild card - 12 games left for the Yanks - 11 for the Sox and 11 for the Tigers - of the remaining games, the Tigers seem to have the tougher schedule out of the 3 - should be pretty interesting over the next 12 days !

I don't dislike Terry Francona.
He simply infuriates me.
Tito's probably one of the most "solid" friends anyone could have EVER.
He simply infuriates me.
Theo also infuriates me.
Larry Luchino is a love-hate thing too.
Whoever made the decision to dump Bronson Arroyo, that motherforya should be taken out put against The Green Monster and shot!
Whoever made the deal to "trade" (in the most liberal of terminolgies) Kason Gabbard for Eric Gagne - The Green Monster and a coups de grace too!

With all the bullship going on in The World Of Sports, referees throwin' games,
former Assistant Coaches becoming RATS, and Coaches of clearly dominant Teams resorting to "underhanded behavior" (which has been so common for the last 30 years that even I fail to comprehend the indignation at times.
And then there's The Hoodlums and The Sadistic Animal Killer.

One has to really begin to wonder; Is "The Show" just That?
When one looks at all The Commissioner Of Baseball "has let slide in the best interests of The Game aka Ticket and Merchandise Sales" a subconsious alarm
begins to sound in my suspicious nature.

I have the same feelings for Theo Epstein that you have for Larry Luccino have. While he has done a great job with developing the young guys in the farm system, but when comes to making trades I have no idea what he is thinking sometimes. He got it correct when he brought in Cabrera and sent Nomar to the Cubs. He didn't over pay to keep Pedro and Damon. Still Wily Mo Pena? Eric Gagne? Anyone could have got Curt Schilling to come to Boston, Arizona was going nowhere and Boston has deep pockets. And not to mention the only other signicant deal that has been done was Josh Beckett and Mike Lowell for Hanley Ramirez and Anibal Sanchez was done when Theo had quit. Theo Epstein goes from one extreme to the other, he's brilliant and then he's horrible.

I also think that most of the policy reguarding the handling of Clay Bucholtz is coming from the front office and not as much from Francona. Theo was going to have him pulled from the game against the Orioles according to the pitch count (120) no-hitter or not.

Hey Chet, glad to see your alive!! I use to tell people that if the Red Sox had a 30 game lead over the Yanks with 31 games to go, I'd be nervous. I'm nervous now!! Manny missed the end of last year and I think he is playing his games again. I think he has no pride and is milking that injury because he is still pissed the Sox didn't trade him. They tried, but everyone wanted him for free. I'll be glad when he is no longer part of the team. I hope the Sox can hang in there.

Yeah, Terry FranCOMA, great idea...bring in Eric GagME with a 1 run lead in the bottom of the 8th. Watch him get 2 outs, then load up the bases, watch him walk in the tying run, yeah FranCOMA, just keep watching...and leave him in the game so he can give up the base hit that blows the game and he chokes again. But I'm sure you feel better because you were loyal to your player and didn't yank him. Yeah, I know, you only had that slug Papelbon warming up, who'd want to bring him in, what with Eric's stellar red Sox record in the 8th inning with a lead.

The question of this thread should be "Will the Red Sox make the playoffs?" They probably will, but might not win the division...after blowing a 14 game lead. 2 1/2 games and counting...
