New Word: Ginormous
http://news.yahoo.com/s/ap/20070710/...ry_s_new_wordsFollowing up on the discussion the other day.
So E here is another synthesized word for you, and millions of kids will get down-graded on a paper for the next five decades because English Teachers don't keep up with the news. Last edited by Momotoro; July 11th, 2007 at 09:37 AM. |

That which is ginormous is undoubtedly also egantic, obvidently.

Fauxcabularly building
Indeed. "A noble spirit embiggens the smallest man."
And one that I've always thought was particularly apropos here: guitarzan. P.S. And let's not forget Rich Hall's sniglets, i.e., words that should be in the dictionary but aren't. Two of my all-time favorites: Rignition: the embarassing act of trying to start your car with the engine running. Rovalert: the ability of one barking dog to activate an entire neighborhood network of barking dogs within seconds.

These synthusions of two words can be quite confetic...or so I would expose. Which leads me to ask, if the verb is "suppose" and the noun is "supposition", should the adjective therefore be "suppository"? Just thought I'd put that in...

The attraction of using a word like ginormous is that it isn't really a word. Once it gets recognized as a word it isn't fun any more. Slang is great and I use it all the time, but it's still slang, more use doesn't change that. Nor does Miriam Webster in its quest to be cool.
It says in the article that it was picked as the 2005 favorite word that's not in the dictionary. I'm going to guess that most of the respondants didn't have to consult the dictionary to know that it wasn't in there, common sense prevailed (at the time.) I wonder if any of those people would now vote it as their favorite word that is in the dictionary.
