Where ever do you build 'em???

In the next week or so, I will be starting to put together a work space in the shed, a proper work space!

Right now I have nothing. I want to create an environment to be able to work on partscasters and anything else that needs doing? (Mainly partscasters! )

I was wondering if anyone would like to throw in their two bits worth and give me some advice on how I should set this area up? Seeing that there are quite a few of you that are already working on guitars in sheds, etc. There must be some do's and don't's (?) that I should know about?

Anyone have a pic of their workspace? That would be a great help!

I have plans for shelving under and above the work bench. I'm not sure at this stage how much room I have yet? That all depends on how much crap I can throw out of the shed before we get to work?

This morning I got up early and a friend and I went to his workplace where they can't get rid of pine shipping pallets and crates fast enough! They have to burn them otherwise! So I got two F100's worth, plenty for now!

Any help or advice would be greatly appreciated.

For painting, identify the (upstairs) window in your house with the strongest "out" draft, and the least public exposure. Build a cardboard "box" screen system from the window opening back into your room, open at the window and open at your end. Mask other important areas with newspapers. Make it big enough to hold a body or a neck, held somehow inside the "box." Don't smoke, turn all heat sources off, make sure there's a good draft but don't use an electric fan motor in the room. Wait for the wife to go somewhere for, ideally, 12 to 16 hours.

Or else paint outside in the backyard....

Aside from proper tools, the most important thing to me is having a solid, stable work bench, with a clean, non marring surface to work upon.....

It doesn't really matter, just if you're going to paint make sure you have proper ventilation.

Electricity.

Don't forget about the electricity.

Figure out what you need.

Then add some more.

Wait...maybe more than that...just a bit more...you're getting close...nudge, nudge...

There! You got it.

I saw a pic somewhere here on the TDPRI of a very clever spray booth fashioned out of an old shower curtain and one of those circular rods. I thought it was Terry Downs (tdowns), but a quick search didn't yield anything.

I like Blazer's setup. Mine's just a flat surface near my computer, which was originally where I worked on amps.

So I have a question?

It's actually more like asking permission I guess?

I'm documenting the process of building the work bench/ workshop photographically. I thought it might be a cool idea to post it like a partscaster build post, seeing that it's really the reason I am making the work bench in the first place, to build partscasters!

Is it appropriate to do a post like this? Would anyone be interested anyway?

I don't know man... it might get moved to the Bad Dog Cafe!

This won't have any political overtones to it, will it?

Well the way I'm thinking is it should end up on a craftsman forum, or something the like?

But I ain't no craftsman? LOL!

I thought it could be interesting in the fact that people could have input on it, or make suggestions on how it could come together? Just a thought?

I'm sure I can use all the help I can get... a backyard and a few hand tools is about all I've been going on.

If you post it, they will come...

I've got two work benches in the basement that look alot like blazer's. Since I'm working on my first build they are cluttered miscellaneous crap instead of guitar stuff. I do most of my messy stuff down there. As far as painting goes... I tried the basement with a make shift spray booth. It didn't work for me. I also tried outside with a make shift booth. That too was not so hot (too many bugs, wind, dust). The best for me is just backing the cars out of the garage and spraying in there.

This is when having a trashed building in Katrina-town works great. Any room will do, the room is seldom much worse off after I am done painting, drilling through chrome plate or routing than it was before. Lots of ventilation totally free of change.

In all seriousness, I'd love to see how you put together your bench. It's something I've never actually done myself. I just work on top of a bunch of stuff that's stacked up.

I wouldn't see it if you put it in the Tele-Tech forum. That section doesn't interest me all that much.
