"Best Of The Beatles"--Your Personal Compilation

Last night, I reassembled Rubber Soul like the American Capitol release, which I personally like better than the British version. Then, I got to thinking, what songs would I select to compile a Beatles "best of" retrospective? With so much to choose from, its no easy task. Even at their worst, they were still pretty good.

I started thinking about different criteria: the most timeless songs, the watershed tunes that did something new for the first time, the most finely crafted songs, etc. I'm not sure it can be done, but lets say a 14 song compilation. How does this look?

1. She Loves You
2. I Want to Hold Your Hand
3. Ticket To Ride
4. Yesterday
5. In My Life
6. Girl
7. Taxman
8. Day Tripper
9. A Day In The Life
10. Strawberry Fields
11. Penny Lane
12. While My Guitar Gently Weeps
13. Something
14. Let It Be

Like I said, its hard! I want it to be a double album!

So, whats your best of? Help me figure this out...

That's the version I grew up with - That's the one that influenced Pet Sounds. It's an entirely different feel from the British version - a real folk rock album as opposed to 'Revolver Part 1'.

My 14 song Best Of would be:

There's A Place
Yes It Is
Nowhere Man
And Your Bird Can Sing
Tomorrow Never Knows
I've Just Seen A Face
With A Little Help From My Friends
Lucy In The Sky With Diamonds
Your Mother Should Know
I'm So Tired
Blackbird
Two Of Us
Here Comes The Sun
Let It Be

Bonus Track: Hey Bulldog

That's really hard! I don't think I would ever be satisfied with a list I would have to make myself? Something (not the song) would always be missing?

There is a compilation album of the Beatles called "Love Songs" I do like though! It seems to flow quite nicely like it should be that way,

Side one
"Yesterday" – 2:03
"I'll Follow the Sun" – 1:47
"I Need You" (George Harrison) – 2:27
"Girl" – 2:30
"In My Life" – 2:24
"Words of Love" (Buddy Holly) – 2:12
"Here, There and Everywhere" – 2:22

Side two
"Something" (Harrison) – 2:59
"And I Love Her" – 2:28
"If I Fell" – 2:18
"I'll Be Back" – 2:20
"Tell Me What You See" – 2:35
"Yes It Is" – 2:38

Side three
"Michelle" – 2:40
"It's Only Love" – 1:55
"You're Going to Lose That Girl" – 2:16
"Every Little Thing" – 2:01
"For No One" – 1:58
"She's Leaving Home" – 3:33

Side four
"The Long and Winding Road" – 3:37
"This Boy" – 2:11
"Norwegian Wood (This Bird Has Flown)" – 2:01
"You've Got to Hide Your Love Away" – 2:07
"I Will" – 1:44
"P.S. I Love You" – 1:59

Ah, the Fabs. Had a wonderful Fab experience last Saturday, playing Side Two of Abbey Road inbetween screenings of A Hard Day's Night at a movie theater in St. Petersburg, Florida.

So I'm gonna go with the whole of Abbey Road. :)

Happiness is a Warm Gun
Why Don't We Do it in the Road (no one will be watching us)

I always loved the Aerosmith version of "Come Together"

Aerosmith - Come Together

After giving it some more thought, I have to dump "Why Don't We Do it in the Road", and replace it with the flip side of the "Let It Be"... "You know my Name, Look up the Number"

Let's hear it for Denis O'Bell!!!

Man, this is too hard. One of my musical endeavors is a Beatles cover band, so I routinely play most of the songs listed already. I love just about every Beatles song, so instead of my 14 faves, I'll list 5 songs that always get a huge, unexpected positive reaction from the audience:
I Call Your Name
Wait
I Want to Tell You
If I Fell
I'll Be Back
None of these tunes are necessarily in the upper echelon of Beatles songs, but whenever we play them, time and time again people seem to just love them. In fact, all five are now in the set list permanently.

Dang! I forgot one that for some reason I think is one of the best little rockin' songs the Beatles ever did: 'I'm Down". Now I gotta knock something off my list! (or go for the double album.)

Amazing--every compilation looks great in this thread--and they are all different. Interesting...

For me, its very hard to gain objectivity on the Beatles because their music was the soundtrack to my teenage years. I was 13 in 64 and 18 in 69. How do you separate the cultural phenomenon of the Beatles from the music when you lived through the times?

Funny that the music still holds up to my ear. I've heard most of these songs at LEAST hundreds of times, yet I never seem to get tired of hearing them.

And now I have a bunch of personal compilations of Beatles that I want to do for my own amusement:

1. Beatles "cover" songs--that they didn't write themselves.

2. The obligatory all John, all Paul, all George and all Ringo comps.

3. All "B"sides

4. "Rockin" Beatles

5. Experimental Beatles

I Can't Do It

There are just too many great songs to trim it down to just 14, but I'll list a few that I really like:

Cry For a Shadow
There's a Place
Little Child
I Should Have Known Better
I Don't Want to Spoil the Party
Ticket to Ride
I'm Looking Through You
Rain
Tomorrow Never Knows
A Day In The Life
Dear Prudence
Yer Blues
Old Brown Shoe
Here Comes the Sun

And I've run out of spaces WAY before I ran out of great songs to list...

Great thread.

i've done the "All George" compilation myself (I call it "The Beatles by George!") and also the Ringo ("Starring the Beatles") as well as the B-Sides ("The Other Side of The Beatles") and the covers ("The Beatles Under Cover")These all make GREAT cd's! very fun to put these together. you'll enjoy it.

"Drive My Car"
"Nowhere Man" (i think the solo is John & George in unison on their new matching Stratocasters)
"Back in the USSR"
