Laying out in the sun at beaches etc:
Do any of you or your family members do this for long periods during the warmer months? Can't stay out too long myself or I get sunburned.
There's a couple of ladies who live in my neighborhood who are out there for hours nearly every day. Hope they don't get skin cancer when they get older.

Chet,
When I do my week in Sea Isle City in August, I spend time either in the water, under the umbrella or covered in Coppetone!! I tan nicely but try not to overdue it. If I had my way, I would be living near the ocean. |

Usually during the last couple of weeks in May it gets warm enough to be out at the beach in cutoffs when I go fishing. I also usually get sunburnt on my face, shoulders and legs. Not too bad this year because it never got too warm and I had to wear hooded jackets etc.

don't just lay out but we go the beach at least twice a week.
with a little common sence you can avoid a burn. some of out tourists check their common sense at the airport terminal. i've seen some really bad cases of sun poisoning. steve |

when i first moved here to the west coast of Florida, i went and laid out on the beach for 15 minutes....my wife was turning a nice shade of pink so i said "i think we'd better head in"......and after an hour indoors, we both were red, and 3 hours later were much redder and most definitely sunburned.....we were not out longer than 15 minutes, probably closer to 11 or 12 actually.....
as the operator of a wee small beachfront motel, i constantly have to caution guests about sunburn precautions & the liberal use of sunblock.....but do you think they'll listen ? |

Not me - I'm done with that nonsense, way too risky nowadays. They say that because of the destruction of the atmosphere The Sun's much stronger than it used to be when I a kid in The 50's and 60's.
Last time I got burned in 1990 I had to take a week off AFTER my vacation because I couldn't wear nothing around my waist. Never again.

Here in San Diego, the beaches are packed. For those of us that go to the beach to swim/surf/bodysurf and not to get cancer, we glob on sunscreen. There's this really good waterproof stuff called headhunter that's a local company. That stuff, although 30 SPF, still protects better than other brands I know of because it doesn't wash off as easily in the ocean.

QUOTE] Yeah, that's what I notice. Especially the past few years- all of a sudden I get sunburned pretty easily. I'm a native American and I'm getting sunburned too easily. My supervisor is of Swedish descent (blonde hair) and he's almost as dark as me. I was in Texas last year and there was a guy there who was worried about Melanoma. He told me I should worry about it too even though my skin is darker. I work with a guy around 72 years old who has scars all over his body from doctors cutting out tumors every once in awhile. He smokes cigs like a smokestack.

When I was kid (teenager) here in Florida and into early adult years, I laid out in the sun all the time. Back then we knew less about how it affected people. It's really not healthy of course, and I stopped that long ago. Now if I'm going to be out for awhile it'll be with sunblock on. Same for the kids and Mrs. Krashpad.
I cringe when I see young people laying out in the sun with no sunblock. I didn't know what I was doing back in the day could hurt or kill me. Nowadays people no longer have that excuse.

I worked in Illinois cornfields in the summer growing up and wore sleeveless shirts and got burned fairly regularly on the shoulders. I also had a Jeep as a young adult and drove around a lot with no shirt on. I now need to go to the dermatologist every six months and always need to get something burned or cut off. My shoulders, back and legs are full of ugly scars.
Wear sunscreen and lots of it. I wish I had. |

I love to be outside, but I really try to use sunscreen, especially while at the beach, or out for an extended period of time. My Mom had a melanoma removed from her leg a few years back, and that really put things in perspective. They say that the rate of skin cancer is rising.

What's also really wild to me is that some women go to the suntan places in the cold months and expose themselves to the UV rays on purpose.

Grew up down the Jersey Shore (the Wildwoods) since I was a year old - I'm 45 now. Even though I'm Italian-American and rarely burn, I never fail to go out in the sun without using some type of protection. I also wear t-shirts and caps more than I used to on the beach while limiting my time exposed to the sun overall. Still, I do worry about how much time is too much now compared to years ago when I worried about how much time was NOT ENOUGH just for a tan.
I think you just have to be extremely aware of the fact that the sun's rays can cause a lot of damage whether you're careful or not. But there are many products out there that can help protect you, but you have to be willing to use them and also educate yourself about skin cancer these days. |

I avoid baking myself, although I did when I was little. I use baby block 45 SPF. I'm 46 and don't have a single wrinkle. Most people think I'm in my early 30's. I'm sure it's part heredity, but also due to the fact that I don't let myself cook.
