Hooligans And Rude Boys (Tim Armstrong Content)

Tim Armstrong (Operation Ivy, Rancid, Transplants) just came out with a new solo album called A Poets Life with the Aggrolites as his backing band. Its awesome if you you like punk, ska or reggae. Anybody else heard it?

Might have a looksee... I've been a Rancid fan for many years but what Tim's been doing lately has basically sucked... i.e. the last Rancid and Transplants albums.

I liked the solo CD - it's all Rancid-style reggae or, rather, ska - but not as much as either the Transplants or the last Rancid disc. Each to his own. In any case, Armstrong is one of the best songwriters going - great sense of melody and place.

Well if it's any good I'll pick it up alright. He was an important person for me when I was 14-17.

Heard a few tracks off of it recently and it's actually pretty good. I agree that some of his latest work has been a bit sub par for him though. A Poets Life is a nice summer disc esp. good background music for cookouts and such. Goes well with tequila :D

The first time I turned a page in a music magazine and found an article about Tim Armstrong, I must admit I was a little bit freaked out! He's nothing like me (he's younger, better looking, and successful! ), but I still root for him!

Cheers,

The OTHER Tim Armstrong

Yeah. Have no doubt. The CD is does Tim Armstrong Justice. But I'm not gonna lie, I liked the last Transplants album and Rancids "Indestructable" wasn't one of my favorites but it had something.

Another thing I really like about "A Poets Life" is that the Aggrolites are on it. It's not like your average solo album. It's more like a collaboration of a great band and a great song writer getting together. I can;t stop listening to it.

Here's the video for Into Action. I've been playing this quite a bit. In a better world, this is a huge hit.

Really? I love the old OPIV and Rancid stuff (and the stuff he and Matt did in between was absolutely killer) but lately Rancid has been more of a Lars effort - seeing as how it's obvious to anyone with eyes that Tim has taken a huge dive off the wagon. The dude doesn't play his guitar or sing at their live shows. He just stumbles around center stage. Used to be a good player and performer. Not anymore.

The solo album sounds really cheesy and derivative to me. It's pure ego-stroking schlock. "A Poet's Life" would make sense if Tim actually wrote anything interesting or original anymore. It's all just so much wankage to me nowadays.

Just MHO - the old stuff is gold up to Life Won't Wait (the closest thing to a Clash album in decades) but those days are over. Lars and Matt are carrying Rancid now.

I do like Lars, but Tim still stands center stage, and to me, that's just embarrassing...

I don't know. Rancid is still together. That must mean they are doing something write. They all have their own side projects going.

Tim doesn't play or sing anymore? I haven't heard that.

I would agree that Lars is probably the most in charge of Rancid right now. You can tell because there has been a subtle drop of ska influence in their last couple albums, and more just straight punk.

A Poets life is great party music. It all just about having a good time with your friends.

Life Won't Wait is one of my favorites but I don't know about saying its close to being a Clash record. I'd just call it a great Rancid record.

It may just be me but ...

What little I heard sounds like the B-52's meets Surf City. Not bad, just not my cup of tea. The guy has a fantastic T-shirt collection apparently.

Nope. You got here first; that makes you Tim Armstrong and HIM "the other". Since I've moved to my current location 3 other guys with the same initials have come on board. I call them "DH2", "DH3", and "DH4", because
I am DH

Yeah, I opened the thread ready to chime in that "our" Tim always seemed exceedingly polite and responsible...

[Full disclosure: I've never actually met either of the Tim Armstrongs in question nor any other members of the Tim Armstrong Army.]
