Gretsch 5120.......Wow!!!
I just picked up a Gretsch 5120 and am totaly blown away by the tone and quality. I went to the local GC to look at the Ibanez Artcore and saw the Gretsch on the wall next to them. The Ibanez was a nice guitar but the Gretsch blew me away. I picked it up for just under $500.
The only thing bad about it is now I have to sell my Surf green Thinline to support my new love. The good news is I have two Thinlines.

Nice guitar. I was in Pittsburgh early last week, and they showed me the same guitar when I was in there looking at Epi Dots and Artcores. The Ibanez was really nice, but the neck profile was kind of skinny. I liked everything about that Gretsch except the tuners. Big body, full neck, very nice. Just out of curiosity here... was that the Monroeville GC or the other Pgh. GC? If it was the Monroeville store, I might have played your guitar a little on Monday night.

The only changes I think I will make will be: -Roller saddles. I am a little rough when playing out. -Tuners. -I want to mod the master volume knob to not be muddy when backing it off. all of these are easy and cheap fixes. Overall, it is alot of guitar for the money!

Brotha, you were born to play that Gretsch!

Beautiful guitar, you are to be congratulated!!
Check out Elderly Instrument online today. They have a '50s Gretsch Round that is the nicest I've seen. Leather binding, cool wood all those great inlays. For a mere 20k..........

Welcome to the world of Gretsch my brother. I too have a 5120 and it's a monster guitar. I changed out the pickups -- the stock Gretschbuckers were a little dark for my taste and I was after a more Filtertronish tone. Put in a set of GFS Nashvilles and am totally enamored with this sucker.
Enjoy. They really are great guits.... |

Very Cool!
What are the differences between a 5120 and a 6120?

Smokey,
About $1,800. No, seriously, the 6120s are made in Japan and are the high-end Gretsches. They have better pickups, Filtertrons and such, and are generally higher end. The 5120s are made in Korea and are very nice. Sort of like the difference between an Epi LP and a Gibby LP. I've played both and a 6120 has the edge. I've played a Setzer model with TV Jones pickups and that's an excellent guitar. Is it worth the price? Well, that's a good question. I know I couldn't afford to drop more than two grand on one. That said, the Korean 5120 is a very nicely built guitar. They are worth checking out... |

I have a Gretsch 5129 (DeArmond sc's instead of hb's) in Hot Rod Red, and I just love her to pieces. I can't afford a top dollar Gretsch right now, but the entire 5120-5129 series really gets you into an authentic Gretsch at a great price. The quality is top notch on these guitars.

I never even plugged this thing in before I bought it!! It sounded so good unplugged, I knew if the pups didn't sound good it could easly be fixed. But the pups sound good. I imagine true Filtertrons would sound better, but for now I am very happy with guitar as is.

I do need to mod the master volume to not roll the highs down so much. Any suggestions on that?

Wow, good for you. I was this close to getting one, but bad timing and financial concerns suddenly got in the way. Oh well, I do have an Epiphone ES-295 to fall back on, but...
