hmmmmmmm.....are you sure it was 41 years ago ?
It was 41 years ago today that Buffalo Springfield made their stage debut as the opening act for The Byrds. The talent that passed through this band is incredible - Steven Stills, Neil Young, Jim Messina, Richie Furay, Dewey Martin, and Bruce Palmer. And of course they paved the way for so many future great bands - C,S+N, Poco, Loggins + Messina, The Eagles, Jackson Browne and so many others. Their last performance was in May of 1968 and their last song was released in August of '68. Hard to believe that a band with such a short "shelf life" had such an impact on the future of rock.I believe that their music is as relevant today as it was 40 years ago.

I love the clowning around after Neil messed up the synch! Funny stuff.
They're pretty much my favorite band of all time... Cheers, Tim

The release of both "Bluebird" and "For What Its Worth" were mind-blowing events for me. "For What Its Worth" remains the defining tune for its time.
What a great band. They opened many doors to rock with songs such as "Nowadays Clancy Can't Even Sing" and "Flying on the Ground is Wrong. Their material stands with the best of its time.

My favorite band at the time
I can recall sitting in the basement trying to learn every riff off the first two
LPs, but especially the solo from Mr. Soul on my shiny black, three pickup, multi-buttoned Hagstrom 3 through a 67 Princeton Reverb. They were just the coolest band with those Gretsches and all the fringed jackets. I can recall the first time I heard the nine minute version of Bluebird on WBCN in Boston sometime in the summer of 1968. Blew me away... Then again the album version was amamazing too. I remember the liner notes said Guitars: Steve, Ritchie and Neil, all 11,286 of them or something like that. As a collector of live bootlegs of many many bands, I would have to say the Springfield was terribly unrepresented in that arena. I've got a collection of about 4-5 shows from 67-68 and the quality was usually awful. There's one show from the Fillmore West that was recorded a bit slow so when it started getting copied at normal speed, Furay sounds like the Chipmunks. Still they were supposed to be a great live band. I was only 14 when they played their one gig in NYC at a club called Ondines. No way my parents would let my go into the city at that age. Hard to believe so much time has passed since For What It's Worth came out. I bought the first LP the day it came out at my local record store...I took it back because the first version did not have For What It's Worth. Little did I realize the first version of the LP would become a prozed and rare collector's item. Anyone remember how the Springfield made a short guest appearance as a hippie band at a seedy Sunset Strip club on the detective show Mannix? |

"I thought they were going to be a revolutionary kind of group. It was fantastic to have three great guitar players who were also three outstanding lead singers. [When they broke up] I think it was one of the few times I cried, because I just thought I had the historic group."

41 years? To think my car was just rolling off the assembly line. Ready to play those great tunes through the optional in-dash AM radio and single console speaker. Those were the days.

Saw them at the Shrine Expo in LA. Opening for the Airplane, I recall. The harmonies and the guitar tones were terrific - stacks of Blackface Fenders, Twins on top of big Showman or Bandmaster cabs. They introduced new song called "Telephone Pole", it turned into "Hung Upside Down" on their second LP.

Neil Young is releasing an Archives boxed set later this year, and it going to cover 1963 to 1972, so there might be some gems, and hopefully live tracks, from the Buffalo Springfield era.
http://www.reuters.com/article/music...39653820070324 I think if Buffalo Springfield lasted longer, their legacy would have been up there with the Byrds and Beatles. I absolutely love the first two albums. Neil's Flying on the Ground and Nowadays Clancy Can't Even Sing are two my favorite songs from the era! |

Check out that Guitar Strap
The last time I saw a guitar strap like that it was being used to lift sailboats out of the water at the Port in Galveston.

In '93 I won a local radio contest called"Sing like neil for tickets" for impersonating Neil and playing(Guild f4ce,dropped D) and singing Harvest Moon. Won tickets to Neil & Pearl Jam concert(60,000+) I also won the Grand Prize...........................autographed Epiphone cheap whatever acoustic signed by Neil in big black wax crayon type pen.WOW!!!!!! I was hopping up and down for an hour(week) The label rep said Neil's remark was,"why ruin a perfectly good guitar by putting my name on it?"!!!!! Sounds like Neil. I know,..... I'm workin' on digitizing the pics, when I find them"keep on rockin' in......." |
