PopMart At 10

Hard to believe that U2's PopMart tour was a decade ago in 1997. I still think "Pop", like the albums before it, 1993's "Zooropa" and 1991's "Achtung, Baby", was an adventurous, highly creative album. I still play it often. Tracks like "Staring At The Sun", "The Last Night On Earth" and "Gone" really show that U2 was pushing things, not resting on their laurels.
Great stuff!

How many more years before I can forget that album existed?

Sorry, but I really didn't like it at all. It shore was pretty to look at though.

Just my own opinion :)

Wow, I feel old now. That tour was my one and only U2 concert. I agree that they were really pushing the envelope with those albums. Something I give them a lot of credit for. But, I didnt' really care for Pop or Zooropa. But, Achtung Baby is one of the best albums ever.

Great stuff!
I was floored when I heard "Gone" and "Last night on Earth" on the recorded concert. I loved the way they opened it, playing "Pop Music" and then Edge going into his melodic playing with the Ric. (I believe?)
(Did you notice the guy aiming the red laser light during that Mexico City concert? I guess they had to deal with him, you can see him do it during a couple of songs.I think Bono went after him at one point, telling him to quit. Weird.)
I didn't think Bono needed to explain that "if it wasn't crap for them , that it wasn't crap for us"...or something to that effect.. I wonder how much negativity came their way when "Pop" came out that he felt he had to do that?

It really got me back into them, and I wish I could have seen it live for myself.
The concerts after are all terrific , but seeing the hugeness of the Mexico City concert recorded, really impressed me.
I would have to say though, that they do keep getting better , and I hope we have more from them that reaches deep.

Saw PopMart in Toronto at Skydome...very cool. It didn't have the overall impact of ZooTV, but some great moments were:

Mofo (opening w/boxing ring intro, great!)
Gone (powerful stuff)
Last Night on Earth (what a killer outro)
Please (the tour version is one of their greatest songs, especially when they incorporated the Sunday Bloody Sunday outro)
One (after Michael Hutchence died, this song took on a whole new meaning)

But they MURDERED Streets and Bullet The Blue Sky on the PopMart tour. I'm not a fan of BTBS anyway, but Streets was terrible. I'm glad they got it back to form on the Elevation tour.

BTW, Universal is releasing a DVD of the PopMart tour in the June 2007 timeframe. Check atu2.com.
