I've got a sunburst CIJ, and after setting it up properly(there's a really good site from Holland I think) it is a real pleasure to play.
The bridge does sap the sustain but it also sounds real good on chopped chords and sharp single note stuff-maybe Danelectroish? A comment about the pick ups is correct , they dont "sample" as much of the string as the originals but you have to play really loud to notice a lot of difference. As always the Fender Japan stuff is beautifully finished and great value for money. |

![]() I picked up an MIJ Jazzmaster for very cheap ($350 - about half the going rate at the time) and immediately put in a set of Curtis Novak pickups. The stock pickups on the Japanese Jazzmasters are basically strat pickups - the vintage pickups (and those of the American reissue) are wound wide and flat, which results in the slightly mellower tone. For anyone put off by the high pricetag on the American versions, I recommend getting a Japanese one second-hand and improving it with new pickups. The fit and finish are pretty darn good, especially for the price. I also have a MIJ Jag, and the situation there is the same.... It's a shame that the Japanese ones are hard if not impossible to get these days - Fender America needs to get a clue and do a run of bound/blocked Jags and Jazzmasters. |

I knew I never should have clicked on this thread...
And darn you to heck, Lewis, for posting that link to Wildwood! I bought my Guild Starfire III from them two years ago, and they were great to deal with. Now I'm drooling over a Fiesta Red Jaguar, and it's all your fault!!! Of the many stupid things I've done in my life, selling my '63 Jaguar was definitely one of them! Cheers, Tim |

Since I have a JM coming, I have been doing a little research. Because of the angle the strings hit the bridge, it causes them to buzz at times. The buzz stop is attached on the bridge to give it a different angle. A good set up and bigger strings will also prevent the buzzing. Here is a link to the Buzz Stop.

Stewart Mathewman with Sade used a white one on
the "Lovers Rock" tour on a couple of numbers and sounded great with it. Evidently Fender addressed the hum problem with the reissues that plagued the originals. I dig a lot of Fenders reissues more than their originals especially the 3 Bolt Models. Zero issues. Ya know, as far as mass production goes THIS might be Fender's Finest Moment. Yeah - right now.

It's a bar that attaches to the tail piece mounting plate. The strings go under that, which greatly increases the break angle over the saddles. It helps prevent the strings from popping off the saddles under vigorous playing and also adds some sustain.

Jag Jazz
Tom have you been here http://www.jag-stang.com
Very helpful. I had quite a wait for my AV Jag, and bought a Mustang Bridge and a Buzzstop while waiting. The folks on JS.com helped me set up my Jag and I have no use for either. All the buzzing/string popping issues are solved with a good setup, for the most part. Be sure to post some pics when you get it!!! ![]() still waiting on my Mint PG, though

I'm guessing the RI will have one big improvement over the originals. The originals had the noisiest pickups I ever heard on a Fender - alot of tone but just noisy.

noize
My AVRI Jag really isn't too much noisier than my Telecaster, even with distortion. That has improved. Same magnificent tone as the old ones, though!! I have heard the CIJ-MIJ can be noisier, but i've never played one.

One of the guys at Wildwood told me he thinks they're getting a thin skin Jazzmaster in a month or so. You could call and check. |

Sorry, but I can't imagine paying $1300+ for a guitar that you WILL HAVE TO MODIFY to play properly. If you want a Jazzmaster, you're probably better off paying around $800 from Ishibashi Music in Japan for a Japanese one. I bought one, and it played great at first, but the bridge went all wonky right away. AVRI's are no different. Jazzmasters sound great, but they're a good example of why "vintage" isn't always a good thing. Leo's biggest mistake was the Jazzmaster bridge. Check out www.offsetguitars.com for lots of great info on the Jazzmaster.
