The Phone Call
I've been expecting this, but it's still a kick in the gut when it finally comes. I got The Phone Call tonight that my poor old dad died, after a long fight with CLL leukemia. He was 84.
Dad was a WWII vet, he crossed the Channel to Normandy on June 7, 1944, the day after D-day. Getting drafted may have been the best thing that ever happened to him, it got his ass out of post-Depression Oklahoma, and enabled him to get a college education. |

My best to you and your family, David. My father paratrooped into Normandy on the big day in 1944. Some would say that your dad and my dad have thusfar represented the United States' greatest generation. I just know that I'm extremely thankful for the way in which I was raised, and I'll bet you are as well.

David, my condolences. I know exactly how you feel. I got a phone call a week ago telling me my brother had passed away after a short illness. What can we do but grieve, remember the good times, and honour those we love.

May him rest in peace: we'll never thank enough all the soldiers from all around the world who helped us to fight the na*i-fascism plague.

Sorry to hear it. We all must pass some time and at 84, your dad did alot of living! My condolences to you and your family. Same to you Eric. My brother and I are very close and to lose him would sadden me deeply. Condolences to you and yours as well. Take care, Tim |

Dave - very sorry to hear of your loss. Even when it's expected, it's still a jolt. I have also gotten that call, and I feel your pain. You have my condolences and prayers.

that has to be hard. I was there when my dad passed last October. I was always afraid I wouldn't be around when the time came. As it was, I was there all through his chemo and radiation. It was known from the outset that there was only a 10% chance of remission. At least he was reasonably active right up to the day he died. In fact, he and my mom were out that morning, going for a leaf peeping tour and stopped for a cup of coffee and breakfast when he collapsed.
my condolences to you and your family. I still cry every once in a while, I miss him. |

I'll say a prayer for him
David,
From the son of another D-Day vet to another, I'm sorry for your loss and wish you strength thru these days. BTW, after my Dad's passing, I found a website dedicated to his crew and made contact with some of the guys. Bob

Thanks for the kind wishes!
I have no other immediate family, having lost my mom and my brother just over a decade ago. So I'm the lone survivor now. Damn. He remarried, and I'm grateful to The Evil Stepmom for being there to take care of him. |

Sorry to hear about that David. I lost my own dad in 2000 and I talk about him all the time. Like yours he had a battle with illness that was hard on him. He's an inspiration to me as I'm sure your own dad is to you and will always be. All the best.

Deepest sympathies. My Dad was also a WWII vet, who fought at Anzio.
I don't think I'll ever get over him being gone. I have nothing but gratitude for the way he raised us, and nothing but the fondest of memories. |

2. All I can say is, in case you need it, focus on how lucky you've been to have it by your side all these years, as opposed to the fact that he is not physically by your side anymore. 3. My thoughts and prayers are with you and yours. 4. And as a French man, please allow me to respectfully thank your Dad and your family. There's a reason German is only my *second* language, as opposed to my first, and it is in great part thanks to the sacrifices that many American families have made. Don't think for a second that it's not appreciated more than words can possibly express.
