Guitar String History

Does anyone know the history of guitar strings?
Sometimes it's hard to acheive the "old time" tone of the older recordings of both electric and acoustic players. I'm starting to wonder if everyone used nickel flatwounds.

Have you considered the sonic contributions of "old time" recording techniques--mics, analog/tube preamps, analog/ tube mixing boards, analog tape, analog mixdown, mastering for vinyl with non-hi-fi speaker systems in mind, etc.? Strings sound like a minor component at that point.

Travis,

Good answer, and yes, I have considered that. Still, there is a difference in sound that goes beyond recording gear and I think string type may play a role in that.
