Worst Guitar Solo

I nominate whoever skronked their way through the solo in "I love Rock and Roll" by Joan Jett and the Blackhearts. If you could make a guitar vomit, this is what it would sound like.

There are a couple of solos I personally consider to be about as bad as it gets by a certain old rocker from up north. What the hey, I'll say it: the solos in "Southern Man" and "Rockin in the Free World" are cruel. IMHO.

That would have to be a lot better to suck.

With all due respect, I still cringe every time I hear "Sympathy For The Devil".

I've got "Lead Guitar 101: Bends" students that can nail that vibe.

I'm always concerned about the safety of someone having a seizure while playing a guitar solo!

I remember exactly where I was the first time I heard it, 20 years: The Outfield, "Everytime You Cry":

http://youtube.com/watch?v=PmaRPPztdGo

It's like they were in the studio and said "Yeah, a David Gilmour solo would be really nice here..." but dude has serious lack of sustain and ideas. It is played on a Tele-shaped object though.

I still think the solo that The Edge pulls when Bono is introducing the band on "Live under a blood red sky" is as shiiite as they come.

As much as I love the Beatles, I nominate Yer Blues. Wrecked a great song.

And Jimmy Page on Southbound Suarez.

"Black Betty" by Ram-Jam, Blam Jam or whatever

Absolutely tasteless, awful, almost as bad as the singer and the lyrics

That whole version of this song sucked. It was nowhere near the original performed by The Arrows.

The solo from "Smoke on The Water", IMHO. Hate the song anyway, but the guitar solo is probably the most turgid, unimaginative piece of guitar playing I've ever heard.

...however, I dig the solo in "I Love Rock And Roll" by Joan Jett, I think it's cool--fits the song perfectly in my opinion.

The solo in "Fight For Your Right" is SUPPOSED to sound like that. Again, fun to me!

Diff'rent strokes...

Glad I'm not the only one. IMO, this is the worst solo on a pop record. Steve should stayed on the golf course.

Eric Clapton "Ride the River" from the EC & JJ Cale "Road to Escondido" album. Sounds like what you hear when you walk into any Guitar Center in the U.S. on a Saturday afternoon.

Fits the song. I love the recording, even if it is a bit over-compressed. How many weeks did it spend at number one? Eight? (Skully does a quick Google search.) It spent seven weeks at number one, and it wasn't just because all those record buyers were suckers and fools.

Yes. Of course, it's supposed to sound horrible. BTW, I have a video of Dr. Hook playing the song on a German pop show in the '70s and they are smashed out of their gourds. I've never seen another band so visibly drunk on stage. Well... except maybe the leader of Flaming Lips when I saw them open for The Replacements at the Berkeley Square in 1986.

That's a primitive masterpiece. Energy. Excitement. It doesn't get any better.

It's mostly the first 7 notes of 'I love Rock and Roll" that bug me- "Gron gronna gron gron gron...sKreEeEeEeEe.." Makes me cringe every time I hear it. That bend fest in 'Sympathy for the Devil' is actually Jimmy page. Listen for Mick to say "Get down Jimmy" before the solo.
