OK, I'll bite and accept that you don't know who it is. It is Christopher Guest, playing Nigel Tufnel in the film "This is Spinal Tap". If you really haven't seen this film, go rent and watch it. It is the funniest movie about rock you will ever see, and the violin thing was taking a bit of a shot at Jimmie Page. And I'm pretty sure the influence for the lyrics to the Spinal Tap songs was no other than AC/DC. The film is filled with little rock history reference jokes. By the way, Guest actually is a pretty good guitar player.

She had a pretty good band in The Full Tilt Boogie Band, but she checked out before she could do too much with them. If I'm not mistaken, they were Canadians from Ronnie Hawkins band and The Paupers.

I like Rage Against the Machine, but the flip-switching, record scratching sounds don't work for me.

I like Frampton, but never been a big fan of the talk-box.

Green Grass and High Tides waaayyyy to long.

But for some reason I didn't have a problem with Jackyl bring in a chain saw on the Lumberjack song.

Dude, the best singer in Van Halen was the bass player. Nirvana was uninspired? Did you watch "Unplugged"? Different strokes I guess but that was something that really inspired me to write songs and play acoustic live.

Other points:

I don't think everybody here gets that Spinal Tap is satire. It's supposed to be a bad solo.

Neil Young's solos are very emotional, like Cobain's. They fit the song writing.

Paul Stanley is actually a very good rythm player. He can probably play a solo if his ego wasn't forcing him to cop an EVH style in that clip. But yeah...that solo totally sucked. What were they thinking? It's worse than letting Peter not lip synch "Beth".

A lot of times you think you're heaing an Ace Frehley solo, it's not actually Ace. Same for the bass and drums on every Kiss album. You should read Kiss "Behind The Mask" if you're any sort of a Kiss fan, or used to be like I was.
That said, I actually like Ace's style. His solo album had a lot of great guitar work on it. That thing just plain rawked. I still listen to it.

Have to disagree there-isn't that Eddie Martinez on that one? If not it sure as hell sounds like him-he's a monster player and was all over stuff in the 80s-note any similarities between that solo and Robert Palmer's big hits?

Are you talking about the 12 minute long lp version or the 30-45 minute long version played live in the late 70s? Because I think the album version is perfect southern rock, only slightly self-indulgent and WAY better than Freebird IMHO.

Well, even though I'm a die hard Beatles fan... The solo on Revolution is awful

I always thought the solo in "Cult Of Personality" by Living Colour was totally off the wall..........GC on a Saturday afternoon on steroids.
It had everything-----terrible tone,no melody,fast sloppy playing.

I find it interesting that Pitchfork Media rated "Comfortably Numb" as one of the worst solos ever. Their reasoning was that it was bad because it was spliced together, rather than spontaneous.

Huh?!?!?!? Lose his place? I hear no hesitation or flubs in that particular solo.

for me hands down the worst solo I ever heard was Waddy Wachtel on Steve Perrys "Oh Sherry" The song was bad enough, but throw in that horrible solo and it was 3 minutes of my life I'll never get back....

That's the one!!

Also, has anyone heard Dwight Yoakum's version of "Crazy Little Thing Called Love"? I love Pete Anderson, but, come on. He's the F@$#%ing producer for crying out loud.

It must have been the long version. It has been a long time. But I recall throwing in a cassette to drive to the beach years ago. It was about a 30 minute drive and the song barely finished by the time I got to my destination. I agree it's a good song. 10 minutes of anything is running long for me.

Mick Jones of Foreigner said that he was recording the solo to "Hot Blooded" when he looked up and noticed that there were flames coming from the back of his Marshall! That was the take that they kept!

Does anyone remember the Seeds? The solo on "Pushin' Too Hard" is pretty atrocious.

I think that the guitar solo that bothers me the most of all is the one played by Neil Gerardo on Pat Benetars "Shadows of the Night". I don't normally like that kind of music, but Neil is really a good player. Not on that song though.

+1 on Takin Care of Business. First solo I thought of when I saw this thread.

Just horrible. The guitar goes way out of tune about halfway through. Didn't they have a big enough budget to do that over again?

And then they put it out!

"Pushin' Too Hard" brings to mind other coprolites like the Count V and "Psychotic Reaction",or perhaps the Syndicate of Sound and "Little Girl' altho that guitarist could play, sort of.A couple of other guys who REALLY couldn't are on a pair of howlers from 1960-Cathy Young and the Innocents "A Thousand Stars" and the Rebels "Wild Weekend".Old-school guys from Buffalo should remember that one.

I always thought the "Louie Louie" guitar solo could have been a lot better. But I suppose the whole thing could have been a lot better, which would have ruined it for a lot of people with too much rum in their bellies.

Hey, hey, hey......

... don't say ANYTHING bad about the "Louie Louie" guitar solo by the Kingsmen! That's my favorite guitar solo of ALL TIME!

Mike Mitchell RULZ!

Wasn't that his name???

That Paul Stanley video is just incredible. I almost thought this was a joke or something from Satur
